In a corner of the room Sergeant-Major Dr. Dowling explained to Surgeon-Major Anderson that the patient, who was a native woman of some repute, had been washing clothes upon the banks of the Molopo, when a flight of one-pound steel-pointed Maxim shells burst about her. The pelvis and the femur had been shattered completely, besides internal wounds of a most fatal character in the abdominal regions. The left foot was also pulverised, the extraordinary part being that any one, after suffering such severe injuries and sustaining so great a shock to the system, should yet be living. The examination completed, Dr. Hayes, turning to the head nurse, said that it was impossible to do anything which would save the woman's life, (p. 163) inquiring, as Surgeon-Major Anderson dissolved a grain of morphia in a wine-glass, if any one knew the name of the native. As the nurse was about to reply, the patient, moaning feebly, expressed in excellent English, that her name was Martha. Then it appeared that she was recognised as being the wife of a Fingo in the location, one who before marriage had been a member of the oldest profession which the world has ever known, but...

INteresting but slightly disappointing

This is an interesting book, disappointing only in that it could have been much more.

The author was a journalist who was trapped within Mafeking during the siege of 1899-1900. "The Siege of Mafeking" consists of a collection of his letters and dispatches that were published immediately after his return to England at the end of the siege, well before the end of the Boer War. As a result, they reflect his unedited observations, presented without the benefit of hindsight.

He starts as a jingoistic, biased observer, writing of a heroic, outnumbered garrison fighting bravely against a superior force of dirty, cowardly, ungallant mob of farmers. You cannot but note his personal transition as he comes to think of the Boers as brave and compassionate enemies.

The war went on long after the relief of Mafeking. The Boers showed themselves to be, not a mob, but one of the finest collections of light mounted infantry of all times. Fighting as small commando groups (the origin of the word) of one hundred or less, they would move rapidly, live off the land and spoils of war, combining or dispersing as necessary, and holding a modern army at bay with only their horses and Mauser rifles. These were all skills about which the British were to learn and respect, but which did not show at their best in a static siege.

My greatest disappointment is that there is little coverage of the day-to-day life within Mafeking during the siege. I would like to know more about how everyday life was impacted. All-in-all, though, this is a worthwhile book for anyone interested in either the Boer War or the stories of man in times of great stress.

Shirley Temple's movie "The Little Princess" inspired my interest in this book , as Her "father" was MIA at the siege of Mafeking! It can be a difficult read for one not interested in a historical account of the Boar War.

My highlighter ran dry (Seriously!)

As a CEO of a Silicon Valley Startup, Mr. Willcox's excellent book has become required reading for my entire team. Sharp, insightful, and full of unique examples backed by solid science, The Business of Choice describes how we (humans) make the choices we do. Real "actionable" intelligence here that will help the butcher, baker, and candlestick maker. It will ALSO help the banker, investor, marketeer, venture capitalist and the entrepreneur. Mr. Willcox has done a terrific job illustrating the principles that have reliably driven behavior for millions of years.

The Business of Choice also happens to be seriously entertaining. Packed with real-world examples of every-day decisions that each reader can identify and relate to in their own lives, Mr. Willcox's well-crafted narrative effectively fires the imagination. It has been over a month since I turned the last page and I still find myself talking to colleagues, associates, and customers about many of the principles covered in this book. Powerful stuff if you are building a brand, selling a product, or seeking to influence and inform. In a world where everyone seems to spend their time seeking and "edge," I think I've found one. Bravo.....

Solid, well referenced and complete book

The business of choice is a late in the publishing cycle of Marketing and Neuroscience. Books such as Think Fast, Think Slow, Why we Decide and the Dan Ariely books have covered much of this ground before. The Business of Choice does a good job bringing these and other more academic papers into focus, lending it well to a student of the subject rather than someone who wants a quick read in order to sound smart. This may not be the first book I would recommend, Arielly's work is much more accessible, but The Business of Choice provides depth and a marketing perspective that these other books lack.

Strengths

The Marketing perspective is one of the strengths of the book. Willcox discusses brain science from this perspective in a clear and almost clinical way. The results is a series of short chapters that help the non-marketing oriented person understand both marketing and the brain.

Completeness is another strength of this book. Willcox has researched and cross referenced the book well highlighting studies and providing paper references that few offer.

The chapters are short, clear and provide useful recaps at the end. This is a book that is easy to read, particularly if you focus on the first sentance of each paragraph and then read particular paragraphs of interest.

Challenges

The book is rather dry in its tone. It is more of an explanation than telling a story or advancing an argument. You will have to work at it in some parts to get the value of particular chapters, but its well worth it.

Overall, a solid addition to anyone who has been studying or interested in the connections between brain science, consumerism and marketing

Not just for marketers

Matthew Willcox is the real deal. He provides us with a complete and astonishing overview of how humans arrive at decisions. He starts the book by outlining that our decisions shape us; how we choose defines who we are. Like a master chef peeling an onion, he folds away layer after layer, exposing all the dark musty corners of our brains that aren’t used to seeing much light. Then he takes that information and brings it to life by giving us examples (many from his own life and experiences). He has an ability to see connections where others don’t, and has a knack for describing those in a way that is simple, complete and refreshing; he basically makes us see things with new eyes.
Willcox weaves science into the book, but instead of thinking about science as merely a way to quantify or validate his conclusions, or as limiting/constraining, Matthew paints the science he presents as inspiration; as a way to advance ideas.
Willcox also has a very compelling voice, presenting his ideas to us with a healthy dose of self-deprecating wit. This book is aimed at marketers; people who sell stuff to others. I believe this book is a great resource for those who create stuff for people as well; writers, illustrators, designers, architects…anyone interested in how people make decisions.

You're in charge. The buck or pound or peso stops with you. Your developers are to build a safety- or business-critical system, and you have a lot of questions to answer. How solid is the software supposed to be? How will you be able to demonstrate to the clients that it is as solid as they wish it? How will your developers be able to demonstrate to you that the software will be solid and (eventually) is solid, so that you can give assurances to your boss and to the clients? You know that there is (unfortunately) no easy solution to the challenges you face-no "eat all the cake you want and still lose weight diet" for developing critical software. But you can take advantage of the experience of others in a wide range of critical software projects.

There are many books for developers and much research about the theoretical ways to build software that does what it is supposed to do (and nothing more, like a virus or Trojan horse) and does it in a consistent, predictable, and safe way. There are theoretical books about how to evaluate the software before you field it or deliver it. But with safety-critical systems, many of which would need over 100,000 years of failure-free testing to confirm required reliability, theory is not enough. You need to know what is practical, what is available right now, and what can give you confidence in the quality of the requirements, design, code, and test procedures.

This is the book for you. In Solid Software we describe the problem and suggest what you can and cannot expect from your developers, their techniques and tools, and their software. Solid Software, mushy in the middle

I teach software engineering at the University of Colorado. I have begun a 3 course graduate series and am using Solid Software as one of two texts in the first course, Software Engineering of Stand Alone Programs. (Subsequent courses cover multiprogramming and distributed systems.) I have found Solid Software to cover the right topics but not to the right level of detail for my purposes. It is hard to find a general book on software engineering that covers adequately enough development factors that contribute to robustness such as requirements and design reviews, static and dynamic testing, etc. I was pleased when I read through the table of contents and saw the 9 areas addressed by the book. However, it is written to, say, first level managers of programming teams, not to the programmers themselves. On many topics, there are excerpts from books or papers that give a high level "hit". The good news is that the reference list at the end of each chapter includes excellent references. I think it's fair to say that my students' (all with industry experience) reaction is that it's not quite detailed enough to really understand. They are not expecting a how-to guide but ... more than this level. But you *can* follow the reference trail to get to more substance. If you ARE a 1st level manager, wondering what more can be done, what is reasonable to ask for, then this may be a great book for you.

If your interested in the "LAW"

I didn't buy this book for me, but for my son, as he was showing an interest in Law of some kind. When I looked through all that there was on Amazon, it was like WOW, where do I start? At the beginning of course. I figured he needed to know where we got our rules and laws in the United States. This book sounded ok. I was first worried it being to much for him to understand right off, but such was not the case. He said it was perfect! A friend of his is taking college courses in law for being a "Paralegal", and he wishes that he had that book to start off with. He told my son, that he wanted to read it as soon as my son was finished. The friend also told my son, that he wished that he started with something like this book. So I guess I made the right choice!

Superb history - if you can read it

This is, in my opinion, the best single volume history of American law (I'm a graduate of Harvard Law School and have taught law at schools in the US and abroad). But the print is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it. It should be in two or even three volumes, but of course it would then be much more expensive. So if you have keen eyesight, or a good magnifying glass, this is a great book.

I'll keep this brief: The title says it all. If you are looking for an excellent, in-depth introduction to the history of law in the U.S., then look no further. Tremendously readable, wonderfully informative, and above all, engaging; this book warrants not just one reading, but several. Read this book, study it, and you'll have taken an important first step towards not only a good layperson's understanding of the legal history of the U.S., but also an important step towards becoming an expert.

Yes, it's that good. If a concise, yet richly detailed legal history is what you seek, this is it. Buy it and read it; you'll be glad you did.

About the Author

Donald E. Knuth is known throughout the world for his pioneering work on algorithms and programming techniques, for his invention of the Tex and Metafont systems for computer typesetting, and for his prolific and influential writing. Professor Emeritus of The Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University, he currently devotes full time to the completion of these fascicles and the seven volumes to which they belong.

Brilliant, but weak as a reference

I bought the TeXbook two years ago, but finally spent a few days reading it cover to cover -- and I am impressed. As many others, I started exploring plain TeX because I wanted more from LaTeX. I was surprised to find how simple and, yes, *elegant* TeX is in comparison. I guess TeX is to LaTeX as C is to C++. Certainly do not buy this book if you just want to use LaTeX!
The writing is superb, full of fine detail and more than a few clever jokes. Why can't recent books about modern systems be so delightful? Maybe David Pogue's Missing Manual series comes close, but the topics are not quite as technical.
As a reference, the TeXbook is weak because each command or concept is scattered across so many places: one introductory chapter, one summary chapter, in exercises, in "dangerous bend" passages, and so on. I believe the book is best organized for front to back reading, although probably in two or three passes if you include the dangerous bends. For reference, I prefer TeX by Topic by Victor Eijkhout. It is out of print, but available for download on his web site.
The paperback edition of the TeXbook is spiral bound. I appreciate that it lays flat, but the back pages are always falling out of the binding!

If you use TeX, this is the one indispensable reference.

While I have to give this book a 10, it is only fair to mention that there are many who find it impossible to read. Knuth wrote three books simultaneously: a guide to TeX for the nontechnical (typesetters, academic department secretaries), for the technical (computer scientists, mathematicians), and for the expert (Knuth himself).

II you are coming to this book for the first time, follow Knuth's advice and ignore the "dangerous bends."

Knuth is one of the world's leading computer scientists and TeX is his most famous program. It is extremely rare for a programmer at Knuth's level to write the documentation -- and rarer still for him to succeed.

However, after you've read this book, and before you decide that you know everything there is to know about design and typography, please read "The Elements of Typographic Style" by Robert Bringhurst

Surprisingly readable

I'm feeling kind of stupid that I spent time reading other books about TeX. I assumed that this one would be incomprehensible, but nothing is further from the truth. It's readable, yet precise. The exercises are helpful. The jokes really are funny, and not distracting. It's amazing that computer science's most brilliant mind is also it's most brilliant writer (that I have run across, anyway).

I agree with the one reviewer that the organzation is imperfect. But, I can't say I've found a book about TeX that does a better job.
