He also touches on many of the factors that contribute to migration in both the “sending” and “receiving” countries and explores the contemporary phenomenon of accelerated immigration.

Interesting story of the life and struggles of an immigrant

This is a very interesting story of one man's journey from his home in Brazil to his new life in the US. He came to the US as a student and eventually became a citizen. The struggles of never quite having a "home" as he is an immigrant from Brazil and so is somewhat of an outsider here, but at the same time, when he returns home to Brazil, he is too American to fit neatly into his former life and culture.

I became friends with H. B. (Keo) Cavalcanti when we were both in graduate school at Vanderbilt University, although I didn't know that much about his former life. This was like reconnecting with an old friend, and I also had a first-hand look into the struggles which immigrants face as they cross cultures and try to find out who they are in both old and new lives.

A Professor Reflects on His Experience as a Brazilian and, Now an American Citizen

Written by an esteemed professor, but easy to read. The content provides new information on what it is like to immigrate to
the United States, expecting to eventually go home to Brazil, but then to begin the long path to U.S. citizenship. But, how does one deal with the contradictions of missing family, which is so important in Brazil; trying to explain to family why he wants to live in a new country; why his son is 100% American, not interested in his heritage and extended family. The mixture of Brazilian history and culture, and the experiences of a professional immigrant, make this an excellent combination of intellectual knowledge and a caring and compassionate man groping through the feelings about being at home, and yet, not at home. Definitely a 5 Star ratings.

About the Author
Peter Barry serves as principal engineer in the Intel Embedded & Communications Group. He has worked in the development of embedded systems for over twenty years in Intel, Basic Communications, Nortel Networks and Tellabs, working with processors from Z80, 68K, PowerPC, ARM, XScale and Intel architecture systems. He is an expert in embedded operating systems and embedded platforms, and has developed board support packages for proprietary RTOS, pSOS, VxWorks, WinCE and Linux. He has developed protocol stacks and applications primarily for data communications and telecommunications and industrial applications.

Patrick Crowley is an associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His research interests are in computer and network systems architecture, with a current focus on the design of programmable embedded network systems and the invention of superior network monitoring and security techniques. He co-founded the ACM/IEEE Symposium on Architectures for Networking and Communications Systems, and co-edited the three-book series, Network Processor Design. He serves as Associate Editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. In 2007, Crowley was chosen to join the DARPA Computer Science Study Group.

Comprehensive survey of modern embedded system design

I'm a mechanical engineer, sorta bored at my job so I look for a book on embedded systems to build some neat stuff in my spare time. I get this book in 2013 because I like the table of contents and that it was written in 2012. It turns out to NOT be the stock, boring type on programming 8-bit/16-bit microcontrollers but a great survey of building entire systems from the ground up. So here's my 2 cents on why the book is great and where it can improve:

Pros:
- Good coverage of every layer of embedded systems: hardware (32-bit CPU's/GPUs, networking ASIC's, peripherals) to software (OS fundamentals, kernels, application frameworks) to networking (protocols and key considerations)
- Useful example code in Python and C/C++ to illustrate concepts
- Great introductory coverage of advanced concepts in modern embedded hardware (instruction pipelining, multiprocessing and the like)

Cons (consider as suggestions for 2nd edition):
- So many typos!
- Motivate topics better. For example, in the chapter on networking, there's a lot of "this is a cool concept but we'll talk about it later". If it's that important, talk about it first

Overall, these authors know what they are talking about and are actually quite visionary. I may even start a company based on some ideas picked up here, besides enriching my hobby life!

PS: Perhaps some EE / CS major will think this is a pretty shallow book but if you are a beginner serious about learning embedded systems the right way, this is the book for you!

Dark, emotional and brilliant

I'm a sucker for a good literary tale and find that we don't get nearly enough of them out of this generation of writers. This debut novel from author Michael James is a noted exception to this, as I found it to be both engaging and brilliant. "Magpie" is the story of Ben, who lives in Saskatoon and sees little that is bright and beautiful in his world, as magpies are apt to do. His mother committed suicide, his father is an alcoholic and his older brother has died. Determined to exact revenge on a local drug dealer, the moral dilemmas begin and the story is quite emotional. Pulled along by a strong character, with real situations and some vivid imagery, I found this to be a very enjoyable read and can't wait to see what this talented writer has in store for us next. Well done.

Exceptionally crafted story

It's an awesome story which captivated my attention when I read the first few pages of this novel. I could not put it down. The depth and the emotion made me go through it.

Michael James did a fantastic job and I liked his approach of writing this novel. The character development and the story crafting left me speechless. It's an emotional story of Ben and it disclosed the reality and tough situations of life through this wonderful novel.

"Magpie" is an outstanding release from James and I will definitely read his next novel.

Abdulaziz Imad Al-Ateeqi, a native of Kuwait, was born on August 15, 1979. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Great Britain on 2001, followed by numerous British military leadership courses. Great Counterpart of the Law of Attraction Studies

Abdulaziz Imad Al-Ateeqi has written a profound book based off of the movie and subsequent book, "The Secret" as written by Rhonda Byrne. This book answers questions for many Muslims who have been confused about whether or not the Law of Attraction, as described in the original movie, The Secret, is one that can be followed in accordance to Islam or not. And this author has answered the questions, as well as demystified the things that did not make sense from the original movie and book.

The Law of Attraction is described as the "like attracts like" that whatever we want will come to us if we change our thoughts and feelings about what it is we want. If we act as if what we want is already here for us, that we will be ready to allow and to receive what we desire by the Universe. Al-Ateeqi says that through the Islamic point of view, The Secret has perhaps unintentionally, misrepresented beliefs about what the Law of Attraction really means. We are told that we are God, and we can create our own destinies, but that is not the truth - we are nowhere near close to being God. However, by knowing God's (Allah's) role in our lives as Muslims (and even as non-Muslims, as this book is not written solely for Muslims to read according to the author), we can understand how to use the basics of the law of attraction for us the right away so that we can fulfill our desires as according to our destiny and invocation.

Al-Ateeqi does a superb job in first introducing the aspect of the Law of Attraction he personally perceived from the movie and the book, "The Secret" in the first section, and breaking down from it, seven points he addresses in the second part of his book discussing the role of Islam and "The Secret." Al-Ateeqi takes each point he received from "The Secret" and analyzes it with actual excerpts from the Qur'an and the Hadith of the Prophet (SAW). He uses the Quranic verses to show that the Law of Attraction does have a significant role in the life of a Muslim and a non-Muslim. For example, Al-Ateeqi says, "That whatever situation you find your life to be in will not change until you change what's within yourself..." He then correlates that with the Quranic verse that says, that God (Allah) states in Surah Arra'd, "Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves..." I found this to be a profound statement, and definitely one of the ways to see how there is the Law of Attraction working in our lives, through Allah.

Al-Ateeqi also does a good job of showing the misconceptions that have come about from "The Secret" and one of the major misconceptions is the belief that we are all God, that because we are energy, we have always and will always be, that if we do "die" we will simply be taken into a new form and will not be judged. This is a severe misconception and the reason why many things that are said in the original, "The Secret" does not make sense for many people. Al-Ateeqi again, shows from the Islamic point of view, along with using many different sources about these misconceptions and what we can do to right it.

I also liked Al-Ateeqi's discussion in the book about destiny, free will and invocation. He states that it is our choices which we make (our free-well) to react with what is already destined for us. Invocation, or prayers, helps us to change a part of what is already destined if it is something that is good for us in accordance to Allah. However, since Allah already knows our past, present and future simultaneously which is beyond our own comprehension. So we must put our faith, and not worry about it. It helped me to understand that the things we desire, visualize and act upon all occur in the time that is destined for us, and not to worry about the timing, only to just enjoy the moment, be happy and make good choices in life that help us, not hurt us.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about how the Law of Attraction can be used in accordance with religion - especially Islamically.

Check your computer first but this is great!

My 12 year old devoured this book and has already written his first mod (longhand on paper) just 2 weeks after Christmas. Now he only needs a computer powerful enough to run it on. (Be forewarned, your home computer might not be enough for programming mods - my computer programmer husband explained this to me.)
