This book fills a crucial gap
By jasonlovesjazz
So you know how to use your database software, but do you know how to design a good database?

I got lucky when I found this book. I'd been building a database myself after taking a class on MS Access at my local community college. MS Access is so easy to use that I was comfortable and confident. I'd built many related tables and built several queries, forms and reports. No problems. Everything was working fine.

But with each element I added, I got less confident about the DESIGN of my ever-growing database. It was working fine, but were the tables and relationships optimal? As it grew more complex, was I going to make a mistake? Or find a fundamental flaw in my early assumptions? Classes and tutorials on database programs cover design concepts so briefly because they need to cover a lot of details about how to use the program. This book does the exact opposite. It glosses over how to use your software and focuses on design concepts. In the preface, the author says:

"This book does not assume that any particular DBMS [database management system] product will be used [... so ...] all of the concepts are presented in a DBMS-agnostic manner. When learned this way, students come to understand that the fundamentals pertain to any database [...]"

This is why it's shorter than some reviewers seem to think it should be. It isn't "too short." It's "focused." There are plenty of other books that cover the other stuff. This book is clear, concise and accessible. I'm glad it didn't go into more technical details.

It focuses on database fundamentals, design and administration by explaining what each of the following concepts mean and why they're so important: the relational model, normalization, functional dependencies, data modeling, entity-relation model, client-server model, DBA, concurrency control, security, backup and recovery, and even a bit about SQL (the computer language behind your DBMS). You can skip the SQL chapter if you want. I did.

Final word: This book is a quick read and easy to understand. It is a bit pricey, but if it fills a crucial gap in your knowledge, like it did for me, it's well worth the price.

Great introductory book, horrible price
By A. Taylor
This is by far the best introductory database book I have ever read or used.

Pro

It is written in very clear English.

It covers the basics of database design very well.

It is not overly technical.

One of the best treatments of normalization I have ever seen.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are well thought out.

Con

The book cost way too much ($60) for an introductory textbook.

The use of the term "theme" was changed to "topic" in the 2nd edition. The editing was faulty and the book only defines topic but used both theme and topic. Not a big deal if you used the first edition and know they mean the same thing but it is confusing to students when the book uses the terms interchangably without defining theme.

This is not a reference for database programmers. If you already understand ERD's and normalization don't buy this book it is meant to be an introduction to database basics not a shelf reference.

I like that the does not cover a lot of history. If you want to know a lot about Codd and the evolution of the different normal forms this is not the book for you. If you want a good introduction to databases for a non-technical class this is the best book you will find in my opinion.

Disorganized and Inconvenient
By Tyler T. Vidricksen
The book has useful information in it, but, as a learning and reference tool, it is very poorly structured. If you know absolutely nothing about databases and plan on completing all the end of chapter exercises from chapter 1 until the very last chapter, then this book is worth 3 stars (average at best). However, if you are taking a college course which doesn't follow this linear structure and have the need to jump around the textbook to complete your homework, this book is a nightmare. It is a nightmare because all of the end of chapter exercises require that you have a partially built Access 2010 or SQL Server database from a previous chapters' exercise. So if you need to learn a specific topic from a specific chapter, you are required to have completed nearly every chapter exercise prior to the lesson of interest. (In case you are wondering, no there aren't online resources which allow you download the needed exercise files).

As I use this book, I consistently find myself being frustrated with how much time I am wasting in order to just begin my homework assignments. Until an edition of this textbook develops a modular, standalone chapter structure, avoid it.

Must read for Sony a6500 (ILC-6500) owners!
By Bill8811
I became a fan of David Busch with the Canon T2i Guide, then the T4i guide, and now the Sony a6500 guide. David's familiarity with the camera and excellent way of presenting the camera operations are described well with supporting color photos, screenshots, and examples.
I have only had the book for a week (just released) and study part of it each day. As he explains, his narrative goes beyond the brief and confusing operations manual (downloaded from Sony support).
After spending $2,000+ on the equipment, this book is a true bargain!

The Speech: Race and Barack Obama's 'A More Perfect Union', by T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting

After Senator Barack Obama delivered his celebrated speech, "A More Perfect Union," on March 18, 2008, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd noted that only Barack Obama "could alchemize a nuanced 40-minute speech on race into must-see YouTube viewing for 20-year-olds." Pundits established the speech's historical eminence with comparisons to Abraham Lincoln's "A House Divided" and Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream." The future president had addressed one of the biggest issues facing his campaign-and our country-with an eloquence and honesty rarely before heard on a national stage.

The Speech brings together a distinguished lineup of writers and thinkers-among them Adam Mansbach, Alice Randall, Connie Schultz, and William Julius Wilson -in a multifaceted exploration of Obama's address. Their original essays examine every aspect of the speech-literary, political, social, and cultural-and are punctuated by Boston Globe columnist Derrick Z. Jackson's reportage on the issue of race in the now historic 2008 campaign. The Speech memorializes and gives full due to a speech that propelled Obama toward the White House, and prompted a nation to evaluate our imperfect but hopeful union.

From Publishers Weekly
A team of scholars and journalists explore the implications of Barack Obama's speech A More Perfect Union, given in the heat of the 2008 primary campaign, in this volume edited by Sharpley-Whiting (Pimps Up, Hos Down). Written by Obama in response to the media frenzy over statements by his pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, A More Perfect Union addressed the enduring legacy of slavery and racism and instantly entered the canon of great American oratory. The contributors use the speech as a starting point to examine the divide between civil rights–era activism (and activists) and the politics of a younger generation that has grown up in its shadow, as well as the development of black oratory, the meaning of a postracial society, the immigrant experience and divisions between the descendants of American slaves and postcolonial immigrants from the Caribbean, Africa and Latin America. Scholarly without being dry, the book offers a way forward from what has become a stalemate between a color-blind white America that sees racism as a problem solved in the 1960s and a nation of ethnic minorities that experiences daily its structural inequities. Review

“[The Speech] offers answers that are a lot more complex than the unvarnished praise Obama's oration has gotten so far…A rich landscape of opinion on the state of race and Obama's singular relationship to it. Last year, we simply couldn't see these arguments in the heat of the campaign; now they're coming into focus.” -- Los Angeles Times

"The time is right for [this] reconsideration... If we are to take the idea of a national racial discussion seriously, then it's especially urgent for a general readership to encounter eye-opening arguments like theologian Obery M. Hendricks Jr.'s articulate defense of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright... The book's tour de force is language scholar Geneva Smitherman's brilliant close reading of Obama's rhetoric, cadence and tone with reference to the "Black jeremiad tradition." She establishes the speech as a unique expression of Obama's biracial, bicultural identity, grounded in Aristotelian rhetoric and touching deep cultural nerves with both white and black audiences." - Salon, Critic's Pick

A Fair, Wise And Balanced Critique Of An Important Period During President Obama's Initial Presidential Campaign
By The Careful Observer
This book shows the power of the media to misrepresent and how, through manipulation, it can bring unnecessary misery to a person's life, in this case, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Reverend Jeremiah Wright had been doing great Church work for many years, with a stellar reputation as a Pastor coming from all sides, a man known for being balanced and tempered. Then, the media got ahold of a sound bite, played it over and over out of its larger context, and did everything that it could to ruin him. President Obama, caught in the crossfire of what was going on, decided to make a speech. In that speech, President Obama balanced a number of very difficult things, remaining loyal to his Pastor, and at the same time, not giving into the character assassination he saw going on. He was honest, diplomatic and wise to a fault in dealing with the issue of race head-on. His speech was simply brilliant and will go down in History as such. This book is a collection of critiques of what happened surrounding that situation. It's fair. It's wise. It's balanced and for all of these things, it becomes a great book for reviewing what happened. For all of those who are Barack Obama fans, there is another book that can add to your store of information about him and complement this one. In Thomas D. Rush's “Reality's Pen: Reflections On Family, History & Culture,” you will find a 1989 account of two private conversations between Rush and Obama. In those conversations, Barack reflects on what he envisions in his romantic future, long before he met Michelle. The account is special, in part, because it contains substance that only Rush and Obama heard. It is also special because the comments were made before Obama became famous between he and another guy who were just normal, everyday guys. The interaction is detailed on page 95 of Rush's book in a piece called “You Never Know Who God Wants You To Meet.” Rush's book can be found right here on Amazon, and the Obama story is just one of the many rich stories from the book.

Powerful Words - 3.5 Stars
By Karie Hoskins
I like very much the idea behind "The Speech: Race and Barack Obama's `A More Perfect Union'". Edited by T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting, this book brings together 15 very different people with very differing views on then Senator Obama's speech of March 18th, 2008. As Omar H. Ali puts it, "The fact is that there are at least as many ways to interpret the words contained within this or any other speech as there are people listening to or reading such words. No single interpretation can capture the entirety of what a particular speaker intends, or all the ways in which their speech is received."

As I read each person's thoughts on that momentous speech, I compared it to my own view. There is a nice balance in this book ranging from extremely favorable opinions to disappointment over a chance missed. The essays are generally written in a very scholarly manner (prompting me to look up a few words) and include a great deal of historical context. I found myself trying to look at the speech through different eyes than my own (which saw the speech as yet another example of our President's intelligence and talent) - which I suppose, was really the point of his words that day.

Was I editing the book, I might have made a few changes, though. First off - I would have let the writers know that the historical context of the speech would be provided at the beginning of the book. Many of them laid the groundwork of what was happening in the country and in the election at that time, and the repetition got tiresome by the third essay or so. Also, I would have either placed the text of the speech at the beginning, so that it was fresh in the reader's mind prior to reading the essays or would have broken the speech up - then grouping the essays that touched on each of those aspects together. (And then put the full text at the end of the book.) I found myself reading some parts of the speech over and over again when quoted in the essays, without having the text as a whole in the background of my thoughts.

It is fascinating, though, to share the same experience with other people whose lives are so different from mine. To know that others - like Alice Randall (as I did) "...first heard The Speech on a car radio. And so it came to me initially as words in air. It came to me as songs often come to me, as disembodied sound that reaches the body with a kind of anonymity that entices one to believe that the voice one hears in one's own."

To see pointed out very important elements that I missed: "At the center of The Speech are three words separating then from now: Not this time. These three words are Obama's victory. Not this time. Repeating this phrase twice and repeating the phrase "This time" six times, Obama begins to break with the past."

For me, the most important there of the speech was that "It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare, and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper." In our country, where "A recent study conducted at Princeton University revealed that a white felon stands an equal chance of being granted a job interview as a black applicant with no criminal record,". Because we finally have a black president does not mean that all the inequalities have been swept away. But it also does NOT mean, as pointed out by Obama, that the fulfillment of his dream to become president means that whites have lost their chance to succeed as he has.

This speech, this man, is a game changer for our country...in I believe, a wonderful way. Because of who he is, because of what he has done, because of what he will lead this country to become. Closing with an anecdote from Obama's senior adviser, David Axelrod:

"Obama wrote in the middle of the night for the two nights before this speech. At two A.M on the day of the speech, Axelrod woke up to see that Obama had sent it to him on his BlackBerry. Axelrod read it and e-mailed Obama back to say, "This is why you should be president."

Should be and is.

Rhetorical Trope with feelings, But not a solution to the Race Problem
By Herbert L Calhoun
These pieces in this edited volume, cover the Obama speech on race, its motivations, its intent, its value as a political document, as a model for framing poverty, and as the introduction or a gateway to a post racial America, etc. What I was hoping for was a thorough paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of it. But that probably would have resulted in dull reading. As a result, I decided to perform my own analysis to place along side that of these very talented authors.

My main concern was how Mr. Obama would address the responsibilities for racism in America. And in this regard, in the fourth paragraph of the speech, he clearly seems to place the responsibility for making the nation a more perfect union entirely on the backs of the victims of injustice. He appears to be blind to the fact that an even greater responsibility should lie on the backs of those, who by resisting social changes they don't like, actually violate the laws of the land and thus are undoubtedly and are incontrovertibly the cause of racial injustice in America.

Those who have suffered injustices through overt violations of U.S. laws, by the majority population, according to Mr. Obama's formulation, must go into the streets to demonstrate, protest and struggle to secure rights that have already been granted them by the U.S. Constitution, but which are then willfully and illegally denied them through resistance by those who choose not to obey the laws of the land against racial discrimination? Obama's one-sided appeal for responsibility strikes me as being, at the very least, "bass ackwards? Especially since in paragraph six he also places an "unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people (meaning of course the majority white population) ." Indeed if these people are as decent as he imagines them to be, why then are they given a "free pass" from their own civic responsibility of not having a right to actively and passively resist laws and social arrangements designed to break down the barriers of racial discriminationn and that are otherwise protected by the U.S. Constitution? And furthermore, since we are a law abiding nation, why are those who resist laws they happen to disagree with (such as laws that call for racial fairness), not also called upon to cease and desist their unlawful behavior? Why indeed are laws which prohibit such resistance, rarely invoke on the side of the victims of injustice and against the perpetrators? Were this to be done, would the need for demonstrations, protests and struggles simply disappear?

Without addressing the underlying cause of injustice, by a majority that willfully chooses to disobey the laws of the land, can the U.S. really call itself a true law abiding nation? The point being, is there really an objective basis for Mr. Obama's "unyielding faith," in the goodness of the American people when it comes to the issue of race? Or is this, as one of the author's has suggested, just a convenient rhetoric trope of an idealized "racially fair America" that does not (and has never) existed except in our own collective imagination?

In paragraph 15-18, Mr. Obama dismisses Reverend Wright's alternative view of America as being endemically racist by suggesting that Wright elevates what is wrong with America above what is right about it. Yet, a careful analysis of Wright's ranting seems to be an attempt to shift at least some of the blame and responsibility back where it belongs: to those who illegally resist respecting the laws of the land. It is after all this resistance that is the very cause of injustice and inequality.

Mr. Obama spends an inordinate amount of space rebuking and "distancing" himself from Reverend Wright and Reverend Wright's comments, but he never attempts to address the underlying cause of Wright's (and most blacks in America), vitriol: "white racism from sea to shining sea." In paragraphs 28 and following, he talks about the history of racism as if it were an abstraction from a bygone era? There is no identification of the racial group or return address of perpetrators: Jim Crow, segregation, and the brutality of slavery just happened? And its cross-generational legacy is just a cruel historical fait accompli for the victims and an enduring passive but illicit windfall for the perpetrators.

In fairness, Obama does end his review of the history of racism by finally calling the white community to account in paragraph 43. He asks them to acknowledge that blacks who cry racism, may not all be crazy, but are most likely reacting to objective conditions of discrimination extant in U.S. culture and society. But the way he proposes to impose responsibilities on these whites, the perpetrators of, or passive recipients of, cross-generational illicit race-based bounties, is not by appealing to the racial hatred in their hearts, or for having them give up their acquired advantages and illicit loot, but by calling on them to help fix and invest in (mostly still segregated) schools, by enforcing civil rights laws (that are acted and re-enacted every generation with the same results) and by ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system (which is a world-class embarrassment and continues to get worse).

In the end everything is resolved by the perennial call for unity. For obvious reasons, it can only be of the "papered-over" kind, since in a nation that is already Balkanized to the maximum, the hope for real unity is very nearly an impossibility. And the reason real unity can never happen in America is that "passive white racism" remains below the radar, yet it is much more insidious than Reverend Wright's incendiary rhetoric. Three stars.

Ancient Egypt, by David P. Silverman

The ancient Egyptians created some of the world's most beautiful art and architecture. To this day, this ancient civilization--which produced the great pyramids, the riddle of the Sphinx, and the riches of Tutankhamun--exerts a strong hold on our imaginations.

Now, in Ancient Egypt, eminent Egyptologist David P. Silverman and a team of leading scholars explore the cultural wealth of this civilization in a series of intriguing and authoritative essays based on the latest theories and discoveries. Illustrated with more than 200 superb color photographs, maps, and charts, this book illuminates the vivid and powerful symbolic images of this fascinating culture--from pyramids and temples to priests and rituals; from hieroglyphic writing to daily life by the Nile; and from temple carvings to the cult of the dead. Correcting the popular misconception of the Egyptians as a death-obsessed people, the book uses the most recent historical research and archaeological finds to illuminate the routines of daily life in royal, elite, priestly circles, as well as at lower levels of society. We learn, for example, that despite the monochromatic appearance of most temple ruins today, in ancient times they would have been colorful, even gleaming structures; that the title "Pharaoh" derives from the Egyptian phrase per aa, which means "great house" and was originally a reference to the royal palace; that temples employed all manner of part-time and full-time personnel, from farmers and carpenters to scribes, jewelers, and keepers of livestock; and that Egyptian law viewed women as equal to men, and they could, in some cases, wield considerable influence.

Its thematic organization provides a unique perspective on Ancient Egypt
By doc peterson
Organized by theme, Silverman's _Ancient Egypt_ provides an unusual approach to the topic. Divided into three parts (The Egyptian World, Belief and Ritual, Art, Architecture and Language), the subsequent chapters are written by a variety of scholars, each an expert in their fields (to name a few: Fekri Hassan a geo-archeologist formerly of Washington State, more recently at the Egyptian Ministry of Culture writing on commerce; Gay Robbins of Emory University on Women in Ancient Egypt, Ian Shaw of University of Liverpool on urban centers, Zahi Hawass - former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities on the Pyramids). These scholars provide a fresh take on Egyptian history.

I was particularly struck by the chapters on "The Celestial Realm" and "Tombs and Temples" as both provided unique details about Egyptian cosmology and the evolution of funerary architecture. The number of color plates and maps are also helpful and illustrative in connecting details to the larger historical narrative. However, I had problems with the historical narrative itself; in a few words, it was simply too brief. The opening chapter, "Three Kingdoms and Thirty-four Dynasties" covered the entirety of Ancient Egyptian history in 20 pages. While the ebbed flow of history was discussed well, one cannot adequately write a political history of the 2000 + years of Ancient Egyptian history in so few pages.

Further, the thematic nature of the book also meant that events or issues would be repeated in chapter after chapter. For example, the reign of Akhenaten is discussed several times: in the political history of the 18th dynasty, again in a chapter about cities and capitals, yet again in the discussion of art and architecture, and still again in the chapter about temples and tombs. While events and individuals like Akhenaten are repeatedly highlighted, other significant facets are overlooked or given short shrift (the Naqada period or the Second Intermediate Period).

While _The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt_ remains unrivaled in terms of its scholarship and depth, the strength of Silverman's thematic approach is the variety of perspectives is provides beyond the exclusively political. For those who already have a passing familiarity with Ancient Egypt but are searching for interesting details and a more social history approach to the time, this would be my recommendation.

This book has the best of the expert writing on their areas of expertise
By CatPaws
This book has the best of the expert writing on their areas of expertise. They all know how to tell you everything in a concise way in language that the average person can understand. The pictures, many I'd not seen before, are for the most part clear enough to make out things, maps and plans of ancient forts and temples homes, etc. are excellent with clear keys and explanations. If you wanted only one good book to read on Ancient Egypt, I would not hesitate to recommend this book.

In this groundbreaking book, she shows how we can leverage the power of games to fix what is wrong with the real world-from social problems like depression and obesity to global issues like poverty and climate change-and introduces us to cutting-edge games that are already changing the business, education, and nonprofit worlds. Written for gamers and non-gamers alike, Reality Is Broken shows that the future will belong to those who can understand, design, and play games.

Practical Advice for Gamers by Jane McGonigal

Reality is Broken explains the science behind why games are good for us--why they make us happier, more creative, more resilient, and better able to lead others in world-changing efforts.

But some games are better for us than others, and there is too much of a good thing.

Here are a few secrets that aren’t in the book to help you (or the gamer in your life) get the most positive impact from playing games.

This practical advice--5 key quidelines, plus 2 quick rules--is scientifically backed, and it can be summed up in a single sentence:

Play games you enjoy no more than 21 hours a week; face-to-face with friends and family as often as you can; and in co-operative or creator modes whenever possible.

1. Don’t play more than 21 hours a week.

Studies show that games benefit us mentally and emotionally when we play up to 3 hours a day, or 21 hours a week. (In extremely stressful circumstances--such as serving in the military during war-time--research shows that gamers can benefit from as many as 28 hours a week.) But for virtually everyone else, whenever you play more than 21 hours a week, the benefits of gaming start to decline sharply. By the time you’re spending 40 hours or more a week playing games, the psychological benefits of playing games have disappeared entirely--and are replaced with negative impacts on your physical health, relationships, and real-life goals. So always strive to keep your gaming in the sweet spot: 7–21 hours a week.

2. Playing with real-life friends and family is better than playing alone all the time, or with strangers.

Gaming strengthens your social bonds and builds trust, two key factors in any positive relationship. And the more positive relationships you have in real life, the happier, healthier and more successful you are.

You can get mental and emotional benefits from single-player games, or by playing with strangers online--but to really unlock the power of games, it’s important to play them with people you really know and like as often as possible.

A handy rule-of-thumb: try to make half of your gaming social. If you play 10 hours a week, try to play face-to-face with real-life friends or family for at least 5 of those hours.

(And if you’re not a gamer yourself--but you have a family member who plays games all the time, it would do you both good to play together--even if you think you don’t like games!)

3. Playing face-to-face with friends and family beats playing with them online.

If you’re in the same physical space, you’ll supercharge both the positive emotional impacts and the social bonding.

Many of the benefits of games are derived from the way they make us feel--and all positive emotions are heightened by face-to-face interaction.

Plus, research shows that social ties are strengthened much more when we play games in the same room than when we play games together online.

Multi-player games are great for this. But single-player works too! You can get all the same benefits by taking turns at a single-player game, helping and cheering each other on.

4. Cooperative gameplay, overall, has more benefits than competitive gameplay.

Studies show that cooperative gameplay lifts our mood longer, and strengthens our friendships more, than competing against each other.

Cooperative gameplay also makes us more likely to help someone in real life, and better collaborators at work--boosting our real-world likeability and chances for success.

Competition has its place, too, of course--we learn to trust others more when we compete against them. But if we spend all our time competing with others, we miss out on the special benefits of co-op play. So when you’re gaming with others, be sure to check to see if there are co-op missions or a co-op mode available. An hour of co-op a week goes a long way. (Find great co-op games for every platform, and a family-friendly list too, at Co-Optimus, the best online resource for co-op gaming.)

5. Creative games have special positive impacts.

Many games encourage or even require players to design and create as part of the gameplay process--for example: Spore, Little Big Planet, and Minecraft; the Halo level designer and the Guitar Hero song creator. These games have been shown to build up players’ sense of creative agency--and they make us more likely to create something outside of the game. If you want to really build up your own creative powers, creative games are a great place to start.

Of course, you can always take the next creative step--and start making your own games. If you’ve never made a game, it’s easier than you think--and there are some great books to help you get started.

2 Other Important Rules:

* You can get all of the benefits of a good game without realistic violence--you (or your kids) don’t have to play games with guns or gore.

If you feel strongly about violence, look to games in other genres--there’s no shortage of amazing sports, music, racing, puzzle, role-playing, casual, strategy and adventure games.

*Any game that makes you feel bad is no longer a good game for you to play.

This should be obvious, but sometimes we get so caught up in our games that we forget they’re supposed to be fun.

If you find yourself feeling really upset when you lose a game, or if you’re fighting with friends or strangers when you play--you’re too invested. Switch to a different game for a while, a game that has “lower stakes” for you personally.

Or, especially if you play with strangers online, you might find yourself surrounded by other players who say things that make you uncomfortable--or who just generally act like jerks. Their behavior will actually make it harder for you to get the positive benefits of games--so don’t waste your time playing with a community that gets you down.

Meanwhile, if you start to wonder if you’re spending too much time on a particular game – maybe you’re starting to feel just a tiny bit addicted--keep track of your gaming hours for one week. Make sure they add up to less than 21 hours! And you may want to limit yourself to even fewer for a little while if you’re feeling too much “gamer regret.”

From Booklist
People who spend hours playing video or online games are often maligned for “wasting their time” or “not living in the real world,” but McGonigal argues persuasively and passionately against this notion in her eminently effective examination of why games are important. She begins by disabusing the reader of some inherent prejudices and assumptions made about gamers, such as that they’re lazy and unambitious. Quite the opposite: McGonigal finds that gamers are working hard to achieve goals within the world of whatever game they are playing, whether it’s going on a quest to win attributes to enhance their in-game characters or performing tasks to get to a higher level in the game. Games inspire hard work, the setting of ambitious goals, learning from and even enjoying failure, and coming together with others for a common goal. McGonigal points out many real-world applications, including encouraging students to seek out secret assignments, setting up household chores as a challenge, even a 2009 game created by The Guardian to help uncover the excessive expenses of members of Parliament. With so many people playing games, this comprehensive, engaging study is an essential read. --Kristine Huntley

Well written, enthusiastic, overpromised, but great
By Mortimer Duke
McGonigal has written a fun and readable book. She has found a niche here -- the idea that video games express our best selves -- and her enthusiasm on the subject is downright infectious. I kept thinking that she is one of those people in the center of her social network. One of those people that convinces her friends to get out of the house and try new, quirky, interesting things. She makes life fun by making it a game. It's nearly impossible not to get caught up in her enthusiasm.

There are two sides to this enthusiasm. First of all, she has managed to convince people, on a grand scale, that video games can be a force for good. She has actually gone out and done things to reform the way we think about video games by creating ones that tap the potential to be useful in the world. She and game designers like her may well be a force that sees this grand idea through to the end.

On the other hand, there's a nagging feeling (the devil on my shoulder) that tells me that this idea is overstated and undersupported. The "science" here really doesn't (and couldn't, when it comes down to it) say that the world is better off as a direct result of video games. In short-term laboratory experiments, there are some interesting results. But the comparison groups here are what beg the question -- playing video games makes you more optimistic as compared to what? Because playing a role playing game for a few minutes makes you more confident in talking to the opposite sex immediately afterward does not mean that playing WoW for 22 hours a week is going to jazz up your sex life.

I can't help but think that what McGonigal is talking about is absolutely true for a select group of people -- her included, and perhaps other optimistic and playful individuals who like to treat life as a game -- but is overstated as a panacea for the human race.

In the end, I'm glad to have read the book, and would recommend it as a well-articulated vision of a very interesting idea, one that is certainly worth having a debate over.

Perspective Likely to Be Helpful for Non-Gamers
By Steve Proctor
I suspect my reactions to this book may be different than the majority of readers, as I assume most readers will be dedicated gamers or those who is close to someone who is a serious gamer and want to know more about it.*

First the positives about this book.
I appreciate than Jane McGonigal brings a fresh perspective and intelligence to looking at games. She draws from research in a variety of quarters which often are elucidating. For example, despite reading many smart popularized books on behavioral and cognitive brain issues, I hadn't read anything about why teasing (or self-deprecating humor) is an effective way of building camaraderie. And of course, she does a good job building a long and detailed case for what games have to offer. Since that has been discussed in detail in many other reviews, I won't say much about it.

The Negatives
Sometimes I felt there was too much detail, even after a simple point was made. I listened to the audio book, so I can't cite chapter and verse, but one example I remember is that she mentioned something about rock stars and reeled off a long list of stars, finishing with the line "to name a few." Well, actually, you named way more than few. I know this may sound like nitpicking, but it was indicative of an overall sense of wishing she'd make her point and move on more rather than give LOTS of examples. My lack of interest in specifics about particular games may be coming into play. Plus the fact when listening to an audio book, you can't skim effectively. So take that criticism in context to your own interests and form of "reading" this book.

Another issue I had, and one that seems to be a problem with so many books, is that she is so focused on building a case (in this case, how great games are) that she seems unwilling to seriously consider counter arguments. As if entertaining such thoughts would be dangerous to her whole thesis.

The biggest unconsidered argument and I suppose my biggest problem with the book (I'm ready to duck from gamers who are likely to be mad at me), is that she doesn't look at the deep problem of people turning to games because they are disappointed with reality. While I'm very interested in her desire to make human activities more engaging by borrowing from what is engaging about games, she doesn't address that turning to games instead of working on accepting reality is, in the long run, damaging or counter-productive--to improving our long term psycho-spiritual health. Watching lots of TV can feel good too, especially in the short run, but it tends to be a way to escape facing our reality and not moving us toward working on accepting the difficulties of being human--which I believe is the real mission/journey for all of us. I suppose that is the ultimate game.

*Well, I should qualify that I love games, but more of the board or word-games category (THE Book of Word Games is a favorite book) than video games (though I suspect based on a minor Pac-Man addiction I had for a brief while in college, I'd probably get way into them if I tried).

Perfectly captures the depth of engagement games provide
By Gigawood
Having been around computers and games since I was 2, and having played online games from the start when I was 13, I can say that Jane McGonigal's description of the online world today's kids are growing up with is extremely accurate. When I sat down to write what soft skills I've picked up from all my years playing online games, I came up with a rather exhaustive list. It's astounding, regardless of the genre played (FPS, like Halo, MMOs like World of Warcraft).

Why do we find games so engaging, so engrossing? Many schools, businesses and the like are blaming 'addiction' to games for people tuning out. It goes far, far beyond simple 'addiction' (though problems do exist). Jane goes to great lengths to EXPLAIN the concepts of engagement this 'video game addiction' really consists of - and that schools, businesses and the greater community can and SHOULD learn from such an efficient, accessible use of these concepts to improve the quality of life for everyone in society.

This is a must read - particularly for any businessperson, teacher, parent, or gamer in the community.
