Bleak but exciting

This was a bit bleak and wasn't as magical as past works. The main character is always doubting himself, and he and his people go through terrible times. A couple of the characters from the last book make brief appearances. The main couple here share similarities to the one in the last book.
I managed to finish this on a couple days in London when it was to cold and dreary to go out.
Despite what I said above, there are complex, interesting characters, humor, and grand adventures. I was confused by a few statements and infrequently mentioned names but didn't dwell on them. There are several missing words, the most important of which on the Kindle edition is at location 1986, chapter 15: "Because a thousand years ago...rather than percent." A number should precede that percent.

Four stars only because there were a few moments of frustration where I wanted someone, Raif, Hal, anyone, to knock Iskanier out of this self loathing and self doubting mire he'd worked himself into. Got a little frustrating but it was well worth it in the end fantastic series so far, can't wait to see what's in store next

Great book! The author makes her world real to you. Character development very strong. You become invested in the characters. Would've liked internal dialogue from both main characters as opposed to just one . Only complaint. Can't wait for the third book. Hopefully it will be out sooner than later.

I gave this whole series to my son on this third birthday. Due to all of the strange names and the chosen vocabulary, I had to explain a lot to him the first few times we read the books. But now, I can read them as they are written and he loves them.

About the Author
Mother Frances Alice Monica Forbes, also known as F.A. Forbes, was born in 1869 into a Presbyterian family. She converted to Catholicism in 1900, and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart as a postulant when she was thirty-one. She was a strong-willed and intelligent woman, and used both these gifts to generously make the sacrifices that the Lord wished of her daily. F.A. Forbes authored a considerable amount of books based on the saints, including St. John Bosco: Friend of Youth, St. Monica, St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Benedict, and The Gripfast Series of English Readers. She died in 1936.

a marvelous short read

Having just really appreciated the story of Saints Monica and Augustine, this was an excellent short read on the mother/son story of two of heavens greatest saints. This delicate little book will make you appreciate and ponder on her inspiration.

This paperback tells of the infinite faith of Saint Monica and her unceasing cries and prayers to heaven for the redemption of the body and soul of her son, Augustine, whose youth was being spent in paganistic ways, much like his father, Patricius. But just as her prayers were in earnest for her son, likewise were they for her husband, who eventually became a Christian, being affected by the love, patience and purity of his wife's life and example.

Monica's being also became a profound influence on her mother-in-law, who made Monica's life miserable, along with Patricius. But in her elder years, she began to take notice of her spiritual daughter-in-law, who always showed her the utmost respect, despite the reproaches thrown against her.

And of course, the most touching and profound story of conversion due to a mother's plea, is that of Saint Augustine. He is considered by many to be one of the most gifted saints, due to his natural insights and blessings, that he initially fought against during his early years, but which brought him such gifts of witness and teaching, in his later years.

The conversion stories of her mother-in-law, her husband, and then most profoundly her son, Monica is a wonderful example for anyone struggling with a yearning and desire to bring their loved ones attention to Our Lord. I loved this book! Such an inspiring woman. She is the patron saint of mothers, wives and for lost children. ( Lost as in religiously lost ) I wish I had found her years sooner! If you have wayward children, troubled marriage or just need a good role model then read this book.

This is the only saint I've read about who tackles the problem of family members who have fallen away from the Catholic Church. In this compact volume, Dowling, a Harvard biologist specializing in vision, explains how the human brain is structured, how it processes and stores information and how it occasionally malfunctions, while discussing its evolutionary roots. Topics as diverse as developmental biology, mental illness, the aging process, the biochemical basis of emotions, spinal cord injuries and the nature of optical illusions are touched upon, as are a range of current and projected treatments for disorders of the nervous system. Although Dowling's didactic style of posing questions to be answered wears a bit thin, a good deal of information is presented in a form largely accessible to the lay reader. While perhaps not surprising given his specialty, Dowling spends a disproportionate amount of time on the intricacies of the visual system while largely ignoring the other senses. Also omitted is any discussion of recent work examining structural differences in the brain between the sexes as well as correlational research suggesting possible links between brain configuration and homosexuality. Nonetheless, Dowling provides a competent introduction to the quickly developing field of neuroscience. Photos and line drawings throughout.

A great book

This is simply the best introduction to neuroscience I have read that is written for non-science students. The book is short, but it covers virtually all aspects of neuroscience, from events taking place in individual synapses to how various regions of the brain contribute to memory, emotion and consciousness. Being a neuroscientist myself, I am fully aware of the complexity of this field. Yet, Professor Dowling is able to explain complex concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. For instance, many students may still have trouble understanding how a neuron's resting potential is formed, or how an action potential is generated, even after taking a whole course in neurophysiology. Yet, all of this is explained lucidly, concisely and accurately in one short chapter in this book, which in my opinion is a tour de force. The second half, which surveys the functions of different brains regions, is especially fascinating. My wish is that Dowling will soon write a new edition of another masterpiece of his, "The Retina-An Approachable Part of the Brain", which is starting to get outdated (it was published in 1987).
On the other hand, if you are a science student, the best introductory text is probably "The Neuron: Cell and Molecular Biology" by Levitan and Kaczmarek. Dowling's "Neurons and Networks" is also good, but I find it to be somewhat wordy.

The best overview of neuroscience that I have encountered.

I cannot empasize enough how useful John E. Dowling's Creating Mind is for a comprehensive understanding of the nervous system and how it works. I am a high school freshman and did not have access to any neuroscience courses, but was extremely interested in the field. After reading highly technical writing like the AP Biology textbook and unfocused popular science books like Steven Pinker's How the Mind Works, I did not have comprehensive understanding of the brain. John E. Dowling's Creating Mind was a godsend.
The book is concise and extremely easy to read, and most importantly is organized in a way that makes sense. Right off the bat, Dowling explains the book's structure. With the first five chapters providing essential background knowledge that other books seem to omit, and the following five chapters describing the human brain. At the beginning of each chapter there are short excerpts from memoirs or case studies that reveal the effects of what Dowling consequently discusses. He describes the molecular processes that take place within minute neurons, but at the same time brings it all together with a lucid overview of how the brain works. Dowling also acknowledges the limitations of our understanding, and offers a glimpse of the future of neuroscience.
Creating Mind is about 190 pages of writing and includes a glossary and an extremely useful Further Reading list. The book is fairly short (I read it in two days), but when you finish reading it, you feel like you know all that a Ph.D knows but without the scientific jargon. If I ever meet Dr. Dowling I will thank him for this incredible piece of work. I sincerely loved this book, as it gave me my first clear understanding of the brain, and although it may not be technical enough for the medical student, Creating Mind is the best introduction to neuroscience for the curious lay reader. I highly recommend it.

This book is fantastic. All you need is basic school science to understand this clear and facinating explanation of how our grey matter functions. If the idea of understanding the human brain fascinates you but you think you'd never begin to understand.....read this book. It's not only easily understood, it's an interesting read as well. I choose this book for my son, not having a male role model I worry if I'm giving him the right tool to become a man. I find to many are still boys in today's society. I found the I formation very helpful and wish I had read it before I choose who would be his father. Thank you for your endless work, I hope all families would take the time to read it.

Thought provoking

Excellent read. The importance of training your body is one that everyone is familiar with. However, to live with excellence one must also train the mind. The path of our lives is led first by our thoughts. A great reminder that to maintain proper emotional balance which results in a higher quality of life, you must first look at self and your internal dialog. Constantly capturing every thought and filtering it through the proper spiritual perspective.
I enjoyed it immensely.

This is a great book that talks about how to make real men - men who don't have any crazy ideas about their "feminine side" or how they should be apologetic for the way they were born. Chuck has hit the nail on the head and this is a book that everyone should read - those with boys or those who know boys!

Wonder Woman's Sacrifice

Just read through a whole bunch of people moaning and groaning about how Superman got humiliated and taken down by a "second tier" superhero Wonder Woman in this collection, hence the "sacrifice" of Superman's iconic status in the DC Universe. They obviously did not understand the story, or possibly chose to interpret it in their own narrow viewpoints. The "Sacrifice" of the title actually refers to the impossible choice that Wonder Woman had to make. A mind-controlled Superman runs rampant and nearly pounds the Batman to death. Faced with either killing Superman to stop his rampage, letting Superman kill the Batman, herself, and possibly other people if she fails, or killing the man responsible for Superman's rampage (killing an ordinary mortal is a line she has apparently never crossed even though she has killed hordes of monsters, demons and even ancient Greek Gods before) she chooses the third option, thus sacrificing forever her reputation as an ambassador for peace (the mission the Amazons sent her out into the world to fulfil). The battle is being broadcast to the world by the man responsible (to break the trust of the adoring public for the superheroes) and the world watches in horror as she executes a seemingly helpless mortal. She sacrifices her mission, her own reputation, and forever tarnishes the image of superheroes by breaking the neck of a mortal in full view of the world. Also, Wonder Woman is no second-tier superhero - she is one of the most recognisable comic book characters of all time - and she has long been shown to be a far more formidable warrior than Superman, lacking perhaps only Superman's brute strength - she has been shown to lift entire islands, for goodness sake, people. All in all, this is one of the best Wonder Woman arcs ever written.

Mostly good, some bad...overall...recommended (spoilers)

Wonder Woman #219-220 (written by Rucka, art by Morales, Johnson et al.)

This is the collection that is an extension of the OMAC Project. It takes place when Superman is min-controlled by Max Lord and attacks several members of the JLA obviously including Wonder Woman. The story overall is written very well, especially the portions written by Rucka. He really delves into the Superman character and knows what makes him tick. He also captures the relations between the big 3 JLA members very well. Yes, they are colleagues, yes they are friends, but there are certain lines that they are not to cross. The Wonder Woman issues after the big event is also handled very well as she re-examines her friendships with Batman and Superman in light of the recent events and her actions. And last but not least, is the fight scene. Long have comic fan boys (including a younger version of myself) examined the situation if Superman fought Wonder Woman...what would happen? Well, Rucka and a plathora of artists answer the question...and answers it very well. Wonder Woman is no push over and in this book, we see the warrior side of her personlaity fleshed out. She even turns her much-maligned tiara into a deadly weapon.

The only problem I had was with Verheidan's portion of the writing which is basically two issues in the book. His ideas seem all over the place and needs to be tied down a bit more, for the sake of making the story flow a little better. While, Rucka insists on slow and methodical, sharacter-driven writing, Verheidan opts for action...too much of it at times. And that's the only downside.

This book is recommended for those following the Infinite Crisis events and also for those who wants a look at the darker DC universe.
