What Kind of Citizen? Educating Our Children for the Common Good, by Joel Westheimer

How can schools teach the skills required for a strong democracy to flourish? What Kind of Citizen?asks readers to imagine the kind of society they would like to live in—and then shows the ways in which schools can be used to make that vision a reality. Westheimer draws on groundbreaking research on school programs and policies to sharply critique the current direction of school reform. He points to the many varied and powerful ways to teach children and young adults to engage critically, to think about social issues, and to participate in authentic debate that acknowledges that intelligent adults can have different opinions. But today’s teachers are being forced to abandon these practices in favor of test-preparation in only a very narrow set of academic subjects. How did this happen? What can we do to set schools back on the right track? How can we realign school goals with what research shows parents, children, and teachers actually care about? How can we save our schools from today’s myopic interpretation of what constitutes an education? Westheimer answers these questions and makes a powerful call for schools to become more engaging, more democratic, and more educative.

“Among the many casualties of a preoccupation with rigor and accountability is the prospect of education for meaningful democratic citizenship. In this refreshingly accessible book, Westheimer not only makes that point but explains the importance of helping students to think critically and question tradition. He issues a welcome invitation to connect our conception of the ideal school to its impact on our broader society.”
—Alfie Kohn, bestselling author

“What does it mean to be a democratic citizen? And what kind of education produces one? For the past 2 decades, Joel Westheimer has been one of North America's most knowledgeable and able guides to these critical issues. Along the way, he has forced us to reconsider the larger goals and purposes of our public schools. His book will provide an invaluable roadmap for anyone who asks the big questions, no matter what they think of his answers.”
—Jonathan Zimmerman, New York University

“In this highly readable, persuasive book, Joel Westheimer reminds us that, in our zeal for higher test scores, we seem to have forgotten the highest aim of education—to produce better people, more thoughtful citizens.”
—Nel Noddings, Stanford University

Review
"Joel Westheimer has written a necessary and brilliant book. Not only does he dismantle the pedagogy of testing, instrumental rationality, and repression at work in the public schools, he reclaims and extends the important goal of defining schools as democratic public spheres, students as engaged citizens, and social responsibility as central to the project of education."
Henry Giroux, Global Television Network Chair in Communication Studies, McMaster Univeristy

"Joel Westheimer has for many years challenged teachers, students, and community members with a profound series of questions: Who are we? Where do we come from? What kind of society should we create? Who do we want to become? Here he synthesizes his ideas about participatory democracy, moral commitment, education, and justice; deepens his astonishing contribution; and extends his reach in a style that s dazzling and clear, entirely accessible, and grounded in real experiences. With What Kind of Citizen?, Westheimer distinguishes himself as a leading thinker and activist in the radical tradition of W.E.B. DuBois, John Dewey, bell hooks, and Fanny Coppin."
William Ayers , school reform activist and author of Teaching the Taboo: Courage and Imagination in the Classroom, Second Edition

"Providing practicing educators with a goldmine of information and examples
This book indicates, once again, that Westheimer is one of the most prolific, original, and visionary scholars doing citizenship education work and research."
James A. Banks, Kerry and Linda Killinger Endowed Chair in Diversity Studies and Director, Center for Multicultural Education, University of Washington

"Joel Westheimer argues persuasively that the current emphasis on standardization in the schools not only diminishes teacher professionalism, but conflicts with citizenship education. Students these days learn to answer questions, but citizens learn to ask them." Diane Ravitch, Professor of Education at New York University, historian of education, author of Reign of Error

"Westheimer is practitioner, critic and visionary. This book is a wake-up call to rethink the real purpose of education." Pasi Sahlberg, author of Finnish Lessons 2.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland?

"In this refreshingly accessible book, Westheimer explains the importance of helping students to think critically and question tradition." Alfie Kohn, author of Feel-Bad Education and The Myth of the Spoiled Child

"In this highly readable, persuasive book, Joel Westheimer reminds us that, in our zeal for higher test scores, we seem to have forgotten the highest aim of education to produce better people, more thoughtful citizens." --Nel Noddings, Lee Jacks Professor of Education Emerita, Stanford University

Pick this book for your personal or school-wide Professional Development.
By A. Heenan
This book is an excellent choice for a personal or staff-wide professional development series. It's short (enough), it's not just for social studies teachers (Westhiemer makes this point early on), and it speaks to the myriad reasons for why we got into teaching in the first place. (Hint: it isn't because we want to raise test scores). It's serves as an exemplar of how to refresh your teaching staff and school community after years of getting beat over the head with PD that is "driven" at us instead of with and by us.

When I first read the WKoC article by Westheimer and Kahn going on 9 years ago, it changed my teaching practice for the better. My students became more engaged, and I felt like it helped me to redefined my purpose, my framing for getting up in front of these young people each day. The book is a refresher too, and Westheimer elucidates on the different ways schools and after school programs can and are investing their energies in Civic Education and the reasons why we should continue to re-prioritize (and reclaim) American education in this manner. Westheimer draws on not only Freire and Dewey, but contemporaries such as Lisa Delpit, Brian Shultz, and Bob Peterson, to really ground this reading in the historical and current contexts for Civic Engagement in schools.

Another excellent and timely book by Joel Westheimer
By Jerry L. Rosiek
Another excellent and timely book by Joel Westheimer. In an era of obsession with high stakes mandatory standardized testing public discourse becomes focused on increasingly narrowly defined learning outcomes. Westheimer reminds us that we need to have the conversation not just about whether something is learned, but also about what is worth learning. This book is an accessible, carefully reasoned, examination of the limits of the audit culture currently suffusing our schools. More importantly, for me at least, it provides a vision of the alternative--a more pluralistic, democratic, and ambitious conception of education in the 21st century. Westheimer's vision is not mere fantasy, but is illustrated with real examples from practice of what is possible, if we have the will to insist on something better for our children and communities.

Joel Westheimer's WHAT KIND OF CITIZEN encourages us to examine the role of education and influence in our lives
By Cyrus Webb
The issue of citizenship is a hot-button one for sure. What I thought was so interesting about the way that Joel Westheimer addresses it in his book WHAT KIND OF CITIZEN is that it allows us to realize it's not just about what we say. It's about how we live and what we do. We are able to get slivers of his own personal story and also see the way the school system might not be doing all that it came to help students better understand and appreciate the importance of education, not just getting a certain score.

This is the kind of book that will have you reading and contemplating what kind of citizen you want to be versus what kind you are being encouraged to be---and the role of education plays in the answer.

American Government: Myths and Realities, by Alan R. Gitelson, Robert L. Dudley, Melvin J. Dubnick

What the typical introductory-level student knows about American government and politics is often based on common myths that distort the reality of the political world. Rather than dismissing those myths as outright falsehoods, American Government: Myths and Realities, 2014 Election Edition, encourages students to confront their preconceived notions in order to think critically about government and politics. Clearly and distinctively woven into each chapter, the myths-and-realities theme provides a pedagogical framework that engages students with interesting conundrums while effectively covering the core concepts of American government.

"This text does an outstanding job of engaging students through salient and current political controversies. It uses perceptions of politics in order to entice readers into discovering the ways in which American politics really operates."--Ken Moffet, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

A practical, basic textbook
By A Customer
This book offers a foundation for political concepts and historic background about the U.S. Using standard survey course format, the author skims the broad topics of government from the core documents, including the Declaration and the Constitution, to the general structures and processes of governing. While I must conclude with a prior reviewer that the writing is unexciting, I have yet to find THE basic government text equivalent of "Democracy - Not 4 Dummies"

American Government
By Raoul Gravel
A trully remarkable text book! This text strives where many fail, in communicating with students from AP level high school to Doctoral studies. Includded are full color diagrams on the political process, governmental structure dating back to the 1600s. Also, philisophical viewpoints from Plato to John Locke. The benefit of the text, is its current up-to-date information on the 'insides' of political views and parties. This text would assist anyone in learning about our nations history and government.

This was a required text for a class...boring right? I was required to test on the majority of the book. I actually enjoyed reading this book! It's so well written and interesting. Ritzer reinterates his points so the reader will without fail understand. Highly recommend!

Stay Away: Takes Away Almost All Usefulness as an eBook.
By Reluctant Technologist
I knew before purchasing this Kindle Book that 4th edition physical copies can be purchased for under $5. I also know that this book covers a bunch of dead authors and thinkers, not exactly a rapidly changing field making each edition iterative at best; so i get it, I understand the inherent racket in making a new version every few years that students will be forced to buy at the university book store (vs a second volume covering additional subjects since the first edition). That said, I was willing to pay $70 in order to have a useful and highly portable reference volume. I expected a fully featured "Kindle Book" at this price. I am astounded by how little effort was put into the creation of this electronic version.

First and foremost, I can't read this "Kindle book" on a Kindle! Not even on my iPad, Which leaves me with my 7lbs laptop as the most portable option.

Second, even as a desktop/laptop only ebook it's a poor one at that. The pages don't reflow or resize, I can only zoom in and zoom out. Its nothing more than a high-priced pdf. And even then, there should at least be some of those nice pdf options such as clickable content in the table of contents to jump to corresponding sections or links in the index to their corresponding sections of the book. Dollars to doughnuts I bet someone at the publishing company clicked "Save As pdf" and sent it over to Amazon as the extent of the care and attention this content received as an electronic publication. It is clear that much more care, time, and attention was paid by the publishing company on how to saddle this book with onerous limitations.

I don't need an expensive and yet non-portable, featureless non-kindle kindle book, I'll just buy a physical copy of the 4th edition for $1.89 plus 3.99 for shipping.
