About the Author
Gavin Lewis received his Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University. His research and publications include studies of central European history, Sumerian civilization, Athenian politics and religion, print and culture in the Renaissance, and the decipherment of Egyptian writing. He has over thirty years' experience teaching Western civilization to undergraduates. He is the author of CHURCH AND PARTY IN POLITICAL CATHOLICISM: THE CLERGY AND THE CHRISTIAN SOCIAL PARTY IN LOWER AUSTRIA, 1887-1907; TOMS MASARYK; and CLOSE-UPS OF THE PAST: WESTERN CIVILIZATION IN CASE STUDIES.

Even though the title indicates that the access code is included - it is not. I know that extras may not be included, but when it is in the title of the order, I expect it to be there. Will have to purchase elsewhere - they are sending me a return slip.

As intense and exciting as any crime novel I've read

Despite only taking a few hours to complete, this was as intense and exciting as any crime novel I've read. James M. Cain manages to squeeze a whole novel's worth of characters, plot twists, and emotions into only 116 pages. Like Ernest Hemingway, Cain employs a minimalistic writing style to fashion uneducated, "simple" characters with complex emotional undercurrents. He knows when to understate a scene and when to use vivid, erotic images to shock his readers. His pacing is nearly flawless, except for one awkward scene with the briefly-mentioned Madge Allen character. And the conclusion, while somewhat of a cliche, is typical of the best 1930's roman noir fiction.
The only reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of 4 is that I wish Cain had added more dialogue and development scenes at the beginning to show how Frank and Cora fell in love and fed off each other's neuroses.

Practical - Could Use More Detail

The book is a much-needed overview of 17025 and I recommend it for persons beginning conformance to this standard. It does not give an explanation for each requirement. For example, all of Clause 5.5, Equipment, is covered in nine pages, however, the chapter does contain a discussion of the goals of 5.5. and a summary of the sub-requirements.

Extremely helpful - great value added!

This exactly what I've been looking for to help my company realize the benefits of implementing ISO/IEC 17025 and to help us best implement the management system. It's the only truly useful book that I've seen on this standard (there may be others - I just haven't seen them yet). The style of presentation reminds me a lot of ISO 9001:2008 Explained, which I've used as a valued resource for many years. The only suggestion I would make for improvement would be if the author could actually include the ISO/IEC 17025 clauses verbatim at the start of each section of his book, rather than just summarize them so that the reader has to flip back and forth between the book and the standard.

The author summarizes every section of the standard, in order, with down-to-earth explanations of what the requirements really mean. He does a very effective job of tranlating the "standards-speak" into practical, easily understandable language. But the real value added comes with the author's suggestions for implementation that go beyond the stiffness (and sometimes density) of the standard to the intent of the standard and the benefits to a company for implementing best practices. The book explains both how to meet the requirements of the standard and the reasons why these requirements are beneficial to a test and calibration lab. He includes many useful samples of forms, procedures, reports and quality tools that illustrate the standard and its implementation. There are large sections on CAPA, continual improvement, measurement uncertainty, traceability and other helpful subjects. One of my favorite features are the "common audit questions" sections.

A powerful addition to my Quality library. Thank you for this much needed book, Bob!

A must for anyone going after ISO accreditation

Well written and to the point. Very much worth the cost for the value that this book brings to a company going after ISO accrditation. I have actually seen Bob in action as an auditor and he has probably one of the best grasps of what ISO is going after. As this is relatively short and to the point you can have your entire staff read and be well prepared for an auditor. Great training material.

At each step, he offers insights from personal experience and shares the experiences of several well-known best-selling authors. Chapters provide suggestions to develop habits that will lead to successful full-time writing, with tips like reading trade journals on a regular basis and clipping articles from magazines and newspapers to jumpstart research. The summary of provided is a list of helpful magazines, web sites, and organizations and a descriptive sample of standard formats for manuscript submission. Damn! Why didn't I write this FIRST?

Many 'how-to-get-published' books are vague in the concept of writing, but strong on the proposal and submittal of manuscripts. Marc McCutcheon makes his book stand out with specifics for getting your writing noticed, published, and sold. His writing style is casual and humorous, yet professional. I found it to be easy to read, inspiring, and factual. He puts in print what I've been thinking for years as I browsed through the latest Thousands-of-Reasons-to-Make-Maccaroni-type titles: I could've written that...I'm not even a PhD and I could've done that, and so-on.
McCutcheon's tips on writing are very concise and motivating, with a fresh delivery of facts, not rehashing. The book also contains a thorough section of resources; from finding an expert on your nonfiction topic of choice, to a glossary of publishing terms for newbies. You'll find examples of query letters McCutcheon used himself to sell his books, as well as sample contracts with translations from legalese into normal language.
He lists several success stories of everyday people who sold blockbusters. Common obstacles are addressed such as not having a degree (he is a high-school dropout himself), whether your idea is promotable, contract negotiation, and how to research. You are shown that with the right tools and hard work, anyone can do it.
Once believing I might be able to write a non-fiction book and get it published, I now KNOW it. This is a must-read.

Great information, complete direction

The common conception about writing as a career is that it is difficult to get into and produces many "starving" artists. While this may be true in many situations, Marc McCutcheon argues convincingly that it is not necessarily the case when it comes to nonfiction writing. According to the author over 50,000 new books are published each year, but only about 3,500 of them are fiction. As a result, most of the competition is in the fiction area. The nonfiction area is by far the easiest one in which to become published.
The author relates how even a beginning writer can learn to write nonfiction and start making a living as a writer much faster than commonly believed. The book is filled with the necessary details of not only writing a great nonfiction work but also how to handle contract negotiations, why you need (or don't need) an agent, writing proposals, marketing and just about any other subject that the writer may need to know.
Throughout the book, McCutcheon encourages the new writer and points out that many top selling titles were written by ordinary people without any special writing skills or training. A book that should be on the bookshelf of all writers, I can't recommend it highly enough.

If you are serious about non-fiction- BUY THIS BOOK!

I had an idea buzzing around for a non-fiction book, I wound up buying "Damn! Why Didn't I Write That?" as the title grabbed my interest and I needed more information on writing proposals.

I stayed up all night reading this engaging book. The next day I began hashing my proposal out, following the wisdom and guidance found in the book. Six months later and I've just been offered a contract from McGraw Hill! I think that speaks volumes!

This book will inspire you! Marc McCutcheon offers all the tools, motivation, and information needed to get started. It's no mystery that you have to add the "ideas",the writing talent, and the perserverance, but the rest of what you need, will be found in the pages of "Damn! Why Didn't I Write That?"

The editors of Sudden Fiction argue for consideration of the shott-short, a highly compressed narrative of under 2,000 words, as a uniquely modern sub-genre of the traditional short story. But while presenting the reader with an abundance of short-short fiction, neither they, nor the writers commenting in the theoretical "AfterWords" section of this anthology, are able to arrive at common agreement as to the aims and characteristics of this form. This is perhaps as it should be, given the diverse antecedents of the short-short in such types as the fablek, folktale, and Zen koan, as well as the myriad directions the contemporary offshoot has taken, encompassing works as different from one another as Tennessee Williams' carefully plotted narrative, "Tent Worms," a modernist fable like H. E. Francis' "Sitting," Peter Taylor's psychological study "A Walled Garden," and the anecdotal humor of Roy Blount Jr.'s "Five Ives." Hemingway and a few other past masters are included to show the historical development of the short-short, but emphasis is on stories of the past five years. Just what you want

A classic of short short fiction, probably my third copy, as people keep walking off with it. Great variety, fun to read, excellent resource for teachers, students and writers.

Bottled Lightning

~It's a great book to have. You can read it on the subway and chew on a few stories in one transit, or just scan the beginnings and look for what catches your eye, or you can curl up on a rainy day and devour the whole book. It's a great way to meet many writers you've heard of but haven't yet read. The only problem is the editor had this in mind so some writers, I presume, were selected because of who they were not what they wrote. Some pieces are vignettes more than "Sudden Fiction." Conversely, some stories are just marvelous: have no wasted words, tightly woven plots, and compelling characters. These stories are a marvel to see and a must for anyone interested in fiction. It's incredible how much depth is possible in such a short space. If you've ever tried to write this book will impress you with how much the right word is essential. Mark Twain once said "the difference between the right word and almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug." Here is lightning-or is it the bug?-bottled up.

The best kind of variety

From Hemingway to Jackson, these authors provide evidence that it doesn't take a lot of words to create immense literary impact. These stories are funny, sad, insightful, odd, and cold - in all the best ways.
