An ah-mazing novel.....

The Invasion of the Boy Snatchers, was the BEST clique book EVER! This novel was more about guys than the other three novels in the series since the relationships between the girls of OCD and the boys of Briarwood (finally!) begin to evolve. But Invasion of the Boy Snatchers still has Massie's witty joke/questions, the Clique's glamorous clothes and the usual drama that follows the Clique like a lost puupy.

Alicia's super hot cousin, Nina, comes to Westchester from Spain. Nina is competition for Massie as she has more experience with boys and Kristen (who now looks like a boy thanks to a horrid haircut) and Dylan easily fall into her clutches. Meanwhile, Kristen and Dylan aren't the only people Nina seems to have spellbound. Nina managed to get the attention of Derrington, Cam and Josh and prevent them from talking to Massie, Claire and Alicia. Massie, Claire (who can't stop talking about wanting to kiss Cam) and Alicia finally decide they have to do something and unleash their cattiness at the Valentine's Love Struck Dance.

The end of the novel was part expected and part unexpected. It really made me want to read the next novel because I'm dying to find out what happens next. Will Claire finally get that kiss from Cam? Will something happen between Massie and Derrington? Guess I'll just have to read the next novel :D

The Best Clique Book!!!

I have read all the other Clique books, but this one was by far my favorite. I read this in one day, because once you get into it, you just can't put it down. I'll tell you a bit about it, but if you haven't read the others, i strongly suggest you start from the beginning.

Alicia's beautiful cousin Nina from Spain spends the semester at OCD, and all the boys LOVE her. She dresses in revealing, sexy outfits, and has alot of boy experience. Massie, Alicia, and Claire despise her because she's a show-off, and has kicked Massie out of the number one spot at OCD (Octavian Country Day School). Kristen and Dylan like her because she will give a pair of stylish boots to whichever girl wins a bet. I'm not going to tell you why Nina is really evil, you have to read the book for that.

I reccomend the whole Clique series to people who are too young to read "The It Girl". They have similar concepts, but that book is for older teens. However, there are curses in these books and phrases like "sluto-rita". Kids under ten or eleven should not be reading this. Anyway, it's a good book, but you should buy the next book, or even the whole series, because you will want to know what happens next, I guarantee that!

The Best Yet

This has to be the best book in the series yet and Lisi Harrison finds something to spice up each book in it's own way.

The Valentine's Day Dance is coming up, and we all know what that means: you better have a date for the dance. But when Nina, Alicia's cousin from Spain visits, it isn't pretty. Secrets will be revealed about Nina and her past and the dance will be such fun. Will Claire move away, or stay? Will Nina be a gal pal, or a total pest? You really should read to find out.

Read the 1st three books or you'll be out of the loop. They are a great investment and you will remember the books for a long time.

Liz, Fane, Peggy, Martin, MI5 & the curious case of the cyber saboteur

This 7th in former MI5 Director General Stella Rimington's "Liz Carlyle" series takes on a case of cyber-sabotage connected to a joint US/UK defense program that's so top-secret not even Liz and her cohorts at MI5 and 6 knew of it until an old acquaintance from Russia turns up to warn Liz that there's a saboteur lurking somewhere in the program who's working for another country. But what country? Dunno.

And might that have something to do with why and how that rogue drone over the Nevada desert suddenly started engaging in destructive acts its programmers never programmed it to do?

Before it's all over, not only the US and UK but also Russia, Switzerland, France and both Koreas will have become involved, and the cast of characters, good and bad, will have grown to the point where this reader found herself having a hard time keeping up with who they all were and what country or character or plot thread they were connected to.

Meanwhile, back on the romantic front, Martin's still very much in the picture and this time poor old Charles doesn't even merit a mention. Hmmmm.

Not among my favorites in this series. But a good read nonetheless. Will probably have greater appeal to those more cyber-savvy than I.

PHANTOM WRITER

I have read all of Stella Rimington's novels with great relish, except this one.
It took me no more than one page or two to realize that she didn't write this one.
The individual incidents are almost vulgar in their simplicity, the subtlety is gone, so is the heroine's usually penetrating personality and intelligence, as well as Rimington's notoriously knowledgeable spy craft. The heroine, as well as the other characters, are now shallow.Both Stella and Liz are absent here.

Besides the nonsensical main argument of a Russian spy who -risking his own life- warns the UK-USA out of the kindness of his soul, there are various ridiculous mistakes such as monitoring email communication from an important and very secret defense institution (MoD), but "..we simply wanted to keep track on who was being emailed, not what the emails said." So what was being leaked was not important, and the emails could have been only asking for a sexual encounter!!

I hope Ms. Rimington goes back to writing, although experience tells me that when a phantom writer has being hired the towel has been thrown in.

As it is, I prefer James Bond's films' female boss, even if she is in MI6.

Convincing

The Genever Trap plot carries all the conviction that one would expect from the former head of MI5. Stella Remington writes well and perhaps, one day in the future it will be possible to see copies of her reports while working in MI5. My guess they would be masterly examples of clarity and subtle insinuations on matters of which she may have disapproved.

AMAZING, INFORMATIVE, AND INSPIRED

When I first started flipping through the pages I was grabbed and intrigued by the color photos. Not being able to actually travel there myself, that was the next best thing.
Usually when I read something that has so much detailed information, I have trouble remembering the details, no matter how good it was or how excited I am about it. I will usually have to read it a few times over.
After reading the first chapter, I not only remembered it, but because of the excellent way it was written, along with the photos, I could almost read it back to you without looking.
I have delved into about a 1/3 of the book and it has already changed how I read the Bible. It gives huge insight into how they lived their daily lives, what the saw around them, and what their culture was like at that time. It helps me better relate to where they are coming from.
Now when I read the Bible, it is more like a movie playing in my head because I can actually SEE and envision what it might have looked like, sounded like, and even the smells.
I cannot WAIT to read this book over and over again. It is truly a treasure to me.

A Light in Darkness is Revelatory!!

I don't think there is another book in the Christian market that can compare to the study and presentation of this matter. Every page is beautifully laid out and the rich information of its contents makes you want to keep coming back to it again and again. I've only had my copy for about a week but I am completely captivated. I love the study of the book Revelations. For the first time, these scriptures become so easy to understand. I can't recommend this book enough. Everyone needs to read it!

Absolutely phenomenal

Rick Renner has really outdone himself with "A light in die darkness". I read A LOT, and I can honestly say that I have never seen a book like this. Rick goes into so much detail which is great for someone (like me) who always want to know "why" and "how". Not only the content, but also the quality of the photos and the book itself is fantastic. Well worth the price!

The first section of the book, on the psychological perspectives of face processing, considers how we are able to recognise familiar faces; how we can extract information such as emotion, sex and age from a face; and how face processing abilities develop.

About the Author

Graham Hole is a senior lecturer at the University of Sussex. He has been researching face processing since 1994, and is the author or co-author of numerous journal articles on the topic. Most of his work has centered around investigating the nature of the 'configural' processing that we routinely use in order to recognize faces. Other interests include the development of face processing in children; the neuropsychology of face recognition; and how we estimate a person's age on the basis of their face.
Victoria Bourne has been a lecturer at the University of Dundee since 2005. Her research interests centre around the development and determinants of cerebral hemispheric differences in cognitive processing, with particular expertise in the neural lateralisation of face recognition and the perception of emotional expression. Recently she was the guest editor of a special issue of the journal Laterality, on changes in emotional lateralisation throughout childhood.

A who, what, where, when, why kind of processing

Face Processing, by Graham Hole and Victoria Bourne is the first and possibly only textbook to look specifically at face processing. It provides a well rounded holistic view of the current knowledge scientists have acquired on face processing and the implications it has on our daily lives. It is a great culmination of current research in the field and its real world applications. I intend to use this book review to provide potential readers with an outline, overview of content and sneak peak at some of the more interesting connections made by the book.

Organization:

The book is organized in chapters like a textbook, with bolded keywords and a bulleted summary of key points at the end of each chapter. It is divided into three parts. First it looks at psychological perspectives, including models of facial perception (ch. 1), how the brain represents faces (ch. 2), emotional (ch. 3) and social (ch. 4) aspects of face processing, as well as the development of face processing in infants (ch. 5) and children (ch. 6). It then looks at neuropsychological perspectives, including those based on clinical observations after brain damage (ch. 7), developmental disorders (ch. 8), cognition (ch. 9), and the "specialness" of faces in processing (ch. 10). In the final chapters, it offers applied perspectives for which this knowledge base can be used including eyewitness identification (ch. 11), own-group biases in recognition (ch. 12), and technology that helps reproduce images of faces (ch. 13). The basic layout provides an overview of how face processing works in the first few chapters, and understanding of why we have developed this way, disorders and other hard data driven explanations of these general understandings, and real world applications. Chapters go into great detail, but key concepts are explained very well early on, so that even a novice in the subject matter can by reading through it sequentially, understand the material. The author also shows an understanding for the fact that most of these concepts are novel to the majority of people, and provides lots of examples outside of face processing to help teach the basic concepts before moving on. The book does a good job of balancing the presentation of current research and putting it into terms that make it understandable and relevant. It also, presents all the research available, even if it is contrasting, and attempts not to draw conclusions on everything, but to help form possible explanations for what has been learned through research.

What's so special about face processing?

Face processing, as one of the chapters of this book indicates, is a special neural circuit that follows the general trends of neural circuits with its own distinct modifications. The specific pathways it follows and ways it is processed depends just as much on the person whose brain is processing the info (age, gender, race, stress, disorders, hormone levels), as it does on the stimulus face (face angle, race, facial features, familiarity, emotional expression) . Faces are processed separately from other non-face visual stimuli. The innate nature of this process is demonstrated through the fact that infants as young as 9 hours old have been shown to process faces separately from other visual stimuli.
There are a couple of evolutionary suggestions for why facial processing has developed as a separate neural circuit. Humans evolved in a very interactive community, where the ability to distinguish on a basic level between friends and enemies as well as between friends on a social level facilitated a survival advantage. And, as the book explains on page 102, "there has been a strong evolutionary pressure for us to be able to detect attractiveness, because it is an indicator that the person displaying it has developed normally, is in good health and has a robust immune system."
As far as the specific pathways that facial information is processed through, there are a couple different models that have been proposed, none of which can be absolutely proven. It is known however that the Fusiform Face Area which lies on the fusiform gyrus in the temporal lobe has developed specifically for processing facial images, and that the development of this area follows other development patterns within the brain. At a young age, children have a wide range of circuits available to process facial data, and the types of facial stimuli that they are exposed to early on affect the types for which they develop perceptual acuity. This results in what is known as "own-group bias", where even into adulthood, humans are better at distinguishing between and recognizing faces of people belonging to their same race then they are for other races.
While all of this research exists supporting the "specialness" of faces, the book also presents counterarguments that suggest facial processing is just a more well developed pathway within the visual object processing pathways. As the book concludes, "whether faces are special or not is still a hotly debated topic and, ultimately, one that is perhaps impossible to resolve conclusively."

Real World Implication: Eye witness testimony

While eye witness testimony is commonly used as a basis for arrests and judgments in many judicial systems across the world, research in face processing has proven that it is unreliable. There are many factors that account for this. Recognizing a face as familiar is a simpler neurological circuit than recognizing a face within a specific context, and this line can be distorted when a victim is looking to identify the criminal he witnessed. Stress levels induced by a crime also reduce the energy put into encoding facial information in favor of focusing on processes relevant for immediate survival. The "own-group bias also comes into effect, as witnesses find it difficult to distinguish between faces of people from other races. Even when witnesses claim that they are confident, studies show that there is little correlation between a person's confidence and their actual ability to recognize a specific face. Given that many current inmates in prisons were sent there based on eyewitness testimony, the culmination of all this research on facial perception has the potential to overturn a faulty identification technique based on a witness's ability to accurately recognize a criminal and save innocent people from going to jail.

Recommendation

This book is a great read for neuro geeks. Reading this book can not only increase your personal understanding of face processing specifically, but provide an example through which to better understand neural processing in general. It is also a good resource for anyone who wants to understand face processing better because of personal experience with face processing disorders such as prosopagnosia or for people concerned with its scientific applications, such as those in the criminal justice field (eye witness testimony), or those interested in psychology (how we perceive emotion and social cues from faces). It does a good job of summing up and organizing nearly all the research currently available on face processing and presenting it in a way that is relevant. It doesn't attempt to make absolute claims, but rather explains the possible implications of available research. Face Processing will provide you with a holistic view of how your brain individually works to recognize the faces of everyone around you and blow you away with an appreciation for the intricate nature of the neural processes involved for a task that we as humans often take for granted.

Place the answer images with description on the answer page and not way at the back of the book!

Pros:
-Many questions hone in on important concepts.
-Images are large enough and clear enough. Coned in images help as well.

Cons:
Case review series still hasn't gotten it right. Here are the problems
-Answer page still doesn't have images with arrows to the findings. You have to flip to the end of the book to see them. However, the answer page is usually about half empty. So, why not place the answer images in the answer page?
-Image findings are very poorly written. About half the time there is no description of findings. Rather they simply state as "Note the fractures at the arrows". When you are learning, more detailed descriptions like "Fractures are seen at frontozygomatic suture, inferior orbital wall and at the zygomatic arch". Not very good....
-Nit picky questions like: what is the normal serum prolactin level?

I would be luke warm about recommending this book.
