Not Bad, Not Thrilling

I have long been a fan of June Thomson and my includes The Secret Files, Documents, Chronicles, Journals and Notebooks of Sherlock Holmes and Holmes and Watson. My ratings have always been in the super to superlative realms. Not here. Although a decent outing, the information seems disorganized, the narrative seems to lose its way and, although the elements are all there, they are not put together in a manner which keeps the reader glued to his seat unlike her other offerings. Definitely buy the book. It isn't money wasted although oce you get some of her other offerings you'll understand my less than stellar marks.

June Thomson has a greal love for the Holmes stories . I used to read the stories as bedtime reading and I never thought about the habits of Mr. Holmes . I never thought ,for example ,that he might be a cocaine addict. Holmes was a brilliant detective . I watched the movies made in the last century in which the stories had been adapted and the actors who played Holmes and Watson filled out my conception of these characters in the stories. However there has been a sea change and there have been novelists who have emphasized all the Holmesian bad habits including even the housekeeper is a person whom Holmes has difficulty with. I did not see any evidence of this coldness between Holmes and the housekeeper in either the Conan Doyle stories or the black and white movie adaptations. Thomson is excellent in skilfully making the sense of location of the events oif her story.

She is excellent in creating suspense and always moving her story forward. and never forgetting the limitations of crime detection in the late nineteenth century.The problem with the novel is that at the end of the novel the mysterious lady in black whom Holmes has observed on the cove is just another wife who has been drained of her fortune by a conniving husband .Holmes has some of the positive characteristics of the Doyle stories and Thomson beautifully suggests that Holmes wants to restore the olds friendship with Watson which Thomson suggests was destroyed by the second marriage of Watson. and the last chapter there is an inference of success. The Holmes of the Thomson book is a nicer character than some of the other Holmes' characters in other Holmes ' novels and closer to the Doyle stories than in the recent TV series.;. Holmes is a gentleman and as in the Doyle stories he wants a married woman to enjoy her inheritance and Thomson beings into the story the effect on Victorian women of the Married Women's Property Act..Even if the ending is sad in some respects , Thomson suggests that even a great detective cannot push aside fate. Now that the Holmes of the Thomson is fully formed ,it is my hope that there will a new story will be on the bookshop shelf shortly, ;

LOVE MACHINE still a blcokbuster

Thanks to Grove-Atlantic Press, the novels of Jacqueline Susann are reappearing in print 15 years after the mass market Bantam editions went out of print. VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is still, after 30 years, the all-time bestselling novel of all time.Those expecting a weak sophmore effort in LOVE MACHINE will be glad to hear that her second novel is actually the best-written of all her novels. This insiders view of the television industry (and specifically the rise of womanizing heel, TV anchorman Robin Stone) is a riveting, compelling and compulsively-readable tale that benefits from Susann's real-life background as a TV spokesmodel and actress who was married to a TV producer.If you thought the showbiz folk in VALLEY were ruthless, wait until you get swallowed up by the cast of characters in LOVE MACHINE. There's also much more plot in LOVE than in VALLEY. This is no romance novel, Jacqueline Susann wrote anti-romance novels. She liked to show readers the exciting and torrid lives of the rich and famous and always made readers feel they were better off living in the midwest than starring in a Broadway show or hosting a network news show. The reissued VALLEY had a quaint feeling of once being a very blunt and racy novel that had mellowed over the years (probably due to it being the blueprint for countless bestsellers over the next three decades). "Mutter...Mother...MOTHER!"

There are two major things that distinguish "The Love Machine" from Jacqueline Susann's other novels: the main character is a man, and the book has a happy ending (at least in my opinion).

This book is a very entertaining read. The story centers around Robin Stone, a smart and sexy television executive who's climbing the corporate ladder and breaking the hearts of many women along the way. Although it seems at times that Robin has no conscience because of the way he treats women, he really isn't a malicious character and doesn't intend to harm to anyone. Regardless of the fact that he always makes it clear that he's not interested in a long-term relationship, women still tend to fall for him, and they fall very hard. The book is divided into three main sections devoted to the women who are affected by Robin the most: Amanda, a beautiful and emotional model; Maggie, a brilliant journalist; and Judith, a middle-aged socialite.

Robin is a very interesting character. He's so charismatic that he even manages to charm the reader, and you'll be rooting for him in spite of all his indiscretions. There is also a deeply buried secret in Robin's past that makes him become vulnerable in very unexpected circumstances, and the mystery surrounding him will keep the reader guessing until the very end. I also enjoyed how Robin interacted differently with all the various women in his life. The last section in the book devoted to Judith was a little slow, but that could be because I was expecting a last-minute dramatic turn of events like I've seen in Susann's other novels, and this book was a little different.

If you enjoyed Jacqueline Susann's other novels, you really need to read "The Love Machine." My only disappointment is that this was the last book of Susann's I had left to read...I wish she had written many more!

Oh how I loved this book!

I didn't know if Jacqueline Susann could live up to "Valley of the Dolls" with this book, but she sure did! "Once is Not Enough" is thoroughly entertaining. The story revolves around January Wayne, a tragic heroine who has an unnatural adoration for her father and is unable to have a successful relationship with another man because of it. When her father marries a wealthy woman to secure his family's financial future, January finally falls in love. Unfortunately for her, the man she falls for is Tom Colt, a married man who is older than her father. Tom replaces "Daddy" for January, but it's only a matter of time before the relationship drags her down into the drug-induced haze that every Susann heroine eventually falls victim to.

Like "Valley of the Dolls," "Once is Not Enough" boasts many colorful characters whose lives intersect in a variety of unexpected ways. There are some funny moments in the book, but for the most part it consists of tragedy and unhappiness. The final few chapters threw me for a loop because the ending is more depressing than either of Susann's other novels. Still, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining read. You won't be able to put it down!

About the Author

Steven M. Cahn is Professor of Philosophy at The City University of New York Graduate Center. He is the author or editor of more than fifty books. Most recently, he wrote From Student to Scholar: A Candid Guide to Becoming a Professor (2008) and coauthored Happiness and Goodness: Philosophical Reflections on Living Well (2015). Dr. Cahn is the editor of The World of Philosophy (OUP, 2015), Exploring Philosophy, Fifth Edition (OUP, 2014), Political Philosophy, Third Edition (OUP, 2014), and Exploring Ethics, Third Edition (OUP, 2013).

Peter Markie is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He is the author of Descartes's Gambit (1988) and the coauthor of Introducing Ethics (OUP, 2014).

Fascinating narrative

Veteran writer Wayne Barret first wrote a series about Donald Trump in the village Voice during the 1970s. He expanded it into a book covering the rise and fall of Trump from the 70s through the 80s. Barrett managed about 10 hours of interviews with Trump before Trump cut him off. Trump tried to both bribe and threaten Barret, offering to get him an apartment while boasting that he had already destroyed one writer. Barret manages to piece together an interesting and compelling story with interviews of those associated with Trump and those who did battle with him. Bribes and intimidation are just one pair of tools in Trump’s tool box. Trump rose benefiting from his father’s money and business connections, by wildly inflating his assets, benefiting from associations with somewhat shady characters, buying influence, hiring close friends and aides of those whose approval he needed, bullying those he can, battling for every petty advantage, and creating an enormous commercially useful personality. The same qualities that propelled Trump to the top – his uncompromising belief in himself and his determination to win at all costs and by any means necessary prove, in the early 90s to be his undoing. In the end, it is a story both fascinating and sad of a person I would rather avoid than know.

A critical examination of Trump's early business career

In the introduction to this book Wayne Barrett recounts a phone conversation with Donald Trump's press agent, who urged the author to drop the word "downfall" from the subtitle. Trump "will make a comeback," he advised, in words that twenty-four years later seem not just prophetic but an understatement. The comeback also has the effect, though, of preserving the relevancy of this book, as it offers readers an ability to assess its subject's early years using sources no longer available to authors today.

The portrait Barrett paints is not a flattering one. He traces the origins of the family's business empire to Donald Trump's grandfather, Fred Trump, Sr., who had accumulated several properties and mortgages before his early death from pneumonia. These his son Fred Jr. -- Donald's father -- transformed into a successful career as a developer, building homes and apartments in Queens and Brooklyn from the 1930s to the 1950s, Barrett emphasizes the role of connections in the development of the younger Fred Trump's business, seeing his ties with the Democratic machines in both boroughs as integral to his business activities.

Federal investigations in the 1950s brought an end to Fred Trump's activities as a developer, as he focused instead on managing his existing properties. Yet Donald exploited both his father's name and the network of contacts he developed to break into the Manhattan real estate market in the 1970s. Barrett goes into considerable detail about the evolution of each of Donald's deals, from his first major project in renovating the old Commodore Hotel to his long-term pursuit of the development opportunities available in the disused 60th Street railyards. Much of the profits gained from these projects were due to the extremely favorable terms Donald wrung from the city, thanks not just to his inherited connections but those of Roy Cohn as well, as the infamously corrupt attorney dealmaker emerges as a surrogate father to the young man.

While Donald's early successes established him as a major figure in the New York region, it was Trump's involvement with the defunct United States Football League which brought him to the national stage for the first time. While Barrett probably overemphasizes Trump's role in bringing about the demise of the league, he makes it clear about how Trump's goal in using the USFL as a means of forcing himself into the more expensive National Football League did the struggling young league no favors. It was during this period in the mid-1980s that Trump also became involved in the casino industry in Atlantic City, where he sought to build up an entertainment empire far larger than could be viably supported by the market there.

Barrett also addresses Trump's emerging national image during this period, as it becomes key to his initial downfall. As he followed his father's career trajectory from development to ownership, he received tens of millions of dollars in loans from banks that he used to go on a massive buying spree. These loans were offered without even a cursory examination of Trump's underlying finances, as bankers were drawn less to a careful assessment of his assets and liabilities than a submission to the power of his personality and the glamour of his public image. The result was that by the end of the 1980s Trump was overleveraged, and Donald entered the new decade facing both the implosion of his heavily indebted empire and an embarrassing and costly divorce from his first wife Ivana.

Overall Barrett's book is a damming autopsy of Trump as a person and as a businessman. While the author's biases occasionally shine through, the sheer amount of detail he uses, based on an examination of the enormous amount of filings, financial records, and lawsuits produced over the course of his subject's activities, makes it difficult to disagree with the substance of his assessments.
