About the Author
Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of Business at the University of Washington Business School in Seattle. His research interests focus on competition and competitive analysis, corporate strategy, international business, organizational structure, and corporate governance. Dr. Hill has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and has served on the editorial boards of several top tier journals, including the Academy of Management Review and the Strategic Management Journal. He also is the author of a successful international business textbook. An active consultant, Dr. Hill has worked with numerous companies. He has worked with Microsoft for almost 20 years and continues to be active within that organization. He received his PhD from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Gareth R. Jones received his PhD from the University Of Lancaster, England, and he is trained in Economics and Organizational Theory and Behavior. His research interests include organizational design for performance, the evolution of business, and corporate-level strategy. Dr. Jones has published articles in all the major management journals and is co-author of several textbooks.

This book is easy to read and interesting for a textbook. This paperback edition, however, does not include the case studies. If you need the case studies for class get the hardcover edition.

Outstanding treatment of the subject

There is no question that for a graduate course in business strategy, either in an MBA or a PhD program, that this book serves as an excellent textbook, covering all aspects of businees strategy in a global economy. All strategies are covered, along with each advantage and disadvantage. Strategies for expansion and survival into foreign markets, as well as locally are fully covered. Of course, the requirements for competetive advantage and how to get there is given thorough treatment.

For the person in business who wants to review or read about business strategies, this book is also an excellent reference tool.

The case studies throuout the book are very illustrative of the points being made.

One thing to be aware of is that the publisher's website does not always deliver to the student all that is promised. If a new edition is published even within weeks of an older edition, then the student who purchased the older edition finds him or herself wihtout much of the promised information available. This happened to me. The ninth edition was published right before my semester started, and the school had already purchased the 8th edition. I contacted the publisher over this, and basically I was S.O.L.

I shall use the text as a reference for years to come.

PREFACE

This textbook is the fourth edition of a premier book used to educate biomedical and other technical professionals over the last two decades. Since technology advances at an ever-increasing pace, we have included some new and exciting changes, which reflect the modern world of medical instrumentation.

Part of the revision effort was a survey of instructors, successful students, managers, and clinical and biomedical engineers and technicians who ultimately employ the readers of this book. New features were added mostly in response to comments and request of the academic reader.

Since this text is broadly organized, working professionals in biomedical electronics and related fields will find it useful for looking up topics of interest and refreshing selected areas, while bypassing more familiar material. In addition, engineers and technologists, who design biomedical equipment, can easily revisit material covering the broad overview or delve into the critical points of pertinent subjects.

Important chapters added to the third edition and retained in this latest edition include information fundamental to a basic education. Chapter 3 is "Introduction to Biomedical Equipment Instrumentation and Measurement." Chapter 4 covers the "Basic Theories of Measurement" technology. Chapter 22 discusses "Computers in Biomedical Equipment," which, among other topics, includes sections on microprocessors and signal acquisition systems, as applied to medical and laboratory instrumentation. This is directed at signal measurement, analog signal processing, analog-to-digital conversion, digital-to-analog conversion, and digital signal processing. These chapters were added to reinforce the concept that many medical instruments are basically electronic measuring devices. The authors believe students need to put into action concepts of accuracy and precision when diagnosing problems and maintaining medical and laboratory equipment. Basic theory of signals and noise provides a necessary background for understanding commonly encountered signals and what to expect from observing them in analog, digital or software form, in addition to windows pull-down menus. In this way, the authors share their savvy with the reader, which has been formulated from theory and years of personal experience. Also, some of the original chapters were enhanced to better cover essential topics, such as the nature and impact of the Internet in medicine and the use of computers in analyzing medical signals, X-ray films, and patient records. In addition, we have extended many block and circuit diagrams with descriptions to improve the reader's working knowledge of biomedical equipment.

In the fourth edition, chapter 24 on "Electromagnetic Interference to Medical Electronic Equipment," including electromagnetic compatibility has been improved, because this is a major issue today, especially with the FDA. In concert, a new chapter 25 is provided on "Quality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement" for two reasons: First, most medical equipment manufacturers must meet ISO-9000 quality assurance standards to sell their equipment in Europe and, increasingly, also in the United States and Canada. Adherence to the recommendations of ISO-9000 may also prove beneficial in defending product liability challenges, because it reflects a manufacturer's ability to set up and consistently apply company and production procedures. Second, hospitals are being forced to provide continuous quality improvement by accreditation authorities, such as the FDA, and their ability to meet these requirements facilitates their competitive edge in the medical marketplace. In addition, chapter 16, "Medical Laboratory Instrumentation," now includes a section on hemodialysis machines to treat kidney failure, because of the increasing requirement for this technology from our aging population. Also, a description of the important Y2K problem now appears in chapter 22, "Computers in Biomedical Equipment," as well as a description of new computer devices in medicine, such as the extended interactive computer system and the palmtop or personal digital assistant (PDA).

Good book for beginners entering the field!

Book talks about human anatomy very breifly in chapter 1. I recommended taking a Anatomy & Physiology class at your local college if you did not receive a biomedical engineering degree. Chapter 2 talks about the heart and circulatory system very well. Chapter 4 talks about measurements such as direct vs. indirect measurements, null measurments, and factors that affect measurments such as error, accuracy, precision. It also discusses measurement errors. Chapter 6 is a good chapter about trasducers. Chapter 8 talks about electrocardiography and is pretty good. Chapter 9 talks about pressure, invasive blood pressure measurements, non invasive blood pressure measurements, cardiac output and thermodilution. It also discusses very well defibrillators, atrial vs. ventricular fibrillation. It also talks about pacemakers and the heart lung machine. Chapter 10 talks about human respiration and its measurements. Chapter 11 talks about respiratory therapy equipment. Chapeter 12 talks about the nervous system. Chapter 16 talks about medical lab equipment and to me the chapter is outdated as far as the equipment they discuss. Chapter 17 talks about ultrasound and is not that great. Appendix D in the book does a good job at discussing electrical safety such as micro vs. macro shock, leakage current, isolation x-formers, line isolation monitors, and GFCI's. The chapters i didn't discuss chapters 3,5,7,13-15,18-27 were not very good or informative.

Biomedical Text book 4th edition hardcover

I received this book in its plastic shrink wrap covering, thus ensuring that is was not used. Although this book is listed as the US hardcover edition, that does not necessary mean that the book is what I would call a premium edition. Although, the binding is glossy hardcover; the pages inside are a non glossy black and white, shades of grey, printing that does have a less than perfect copied appearance with a few flaws in the printing. So if you are expecting a full color illustration with glossy pages as in traaditional text books, this is not. I is my guess why this book was selling for about 1/2 the price new as other new books.
As far as content, I used this book for a semester of college class. We studied most of the chapters. Although, I thought that the chapters were well organized; much material was old and dated, though still valid. Many changes in technology and procedures have occured since then and I believe that the book needs a through updating. In conclussion, the text book did its job, and was a requirement of the class.

About the Author
CHARLES DOWDING grew up on a dairy farm in Somerset. After graduating from Cambridge he worked for a hotel in the Inner Hebrides before starting to grow organic vegetables commercially on the family farm in the early 1980s. In 1990 he left behind what was by then a large market garden to live in France and Zambia. Returning to Somerset in the mid 1990s, he established a bed and breakfast and vegetable growing business at Lower Farm in Shepton Montague, Somerset. There, Charles's salad bags were the main output from his two-acre garden of permanent raised beds and fruit trees. Charles runs vegetable-growing courses and lectures and writes books on his unique growing techniques. Since 2012 Charles has begun a new garden at Shepton Mallet in Somerset which he has designed using no-dig principles.

Thorough book on Vegetable Gardening in Compost on top of your Soil

Charles Dowding's Vegetable Course is a beautiful and well-written thorough book on growing vegetables in compost on top of your soil in beds with/without sides. Also essential to his no-dig method is pulling weeds immediately before they spread seed or even grow roots enough to require more effort to remove or take light, water, and nutrients from your crops.

I'm new to gardening and I'm so happy I read this book before starting my first garden this spring. I learned so many valuable techniques, plus the reasoning and proof behind them, that I know I'll have more success than I would have otherwise. Easy to read, and understand with great photos.

When life is at its darkest, change is inevitable!

Dr. Gregory V. Jones Jr., has chronicled the biblical epic of Job, injecting those points into the modern day struggles that every human beings faces...the challenges and the necessary tools needed to overcome.

The author takes us beyond the torment that besieges Job, reaching down into the depths of the story, challenging us with thought provoking dialogue:
"Is misfortune always a divine punishment for something?"

In our humanness, we feel the desire to lash out at God for the terror that befalls us. But Dr. Jones has a unique gift of grasping and communicating the glorious, and sometimes mysterious, truths of scripture. Relating to the reader that "change is inevitable" and the wisdom of God is beyond human comprehension regardless of what happens .

In this "must read for all Christians", when life is at its darkest ,... what is life without change? ....change without struggle, ....struggle without strength. Because within the struggle we discover our strength not our triumph. Without it{struggle} how can we rejoice in the triumph.

I recommend this book for "any one" seeking encouragement through inspirational writings.

About the Author
Dr. Vasant Lad, BAMS, MASc, brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. He received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pune, in Pune, India in 1968 and a master of Ayurvedic science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India in 1980. He served for three years as medical director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune, India. He also held the position of professor of clinical medicine for seven years at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, where he was an instructor for many years. Dr. Lad's academic and practical training includes the study of allopathic medicine (Western medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda. In 1979, he began traveling throughout the United States sharing his knowledge of Ayurveda, and in 1981, he returned to New Mexico to teach Ayurveda. In 1984, he founded and began his position as principal instructor and director of The Ayurvedic Institute.

Dr. Vasant Lad is a world-renowned ayurvedic physician, born and educated in India, with more than forty years of clinical experience. He is one of the world's leading teachers and scholars of ayurveda, and served as professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pune College of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery as well as director of its affiliated hospital. Currently, he is president of and a senior faculty member at the Ayurvedic Institute, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Vasant Lad is the author of several professional texts and popular works on ayurveda and has written countless articles on the subject.

Long ago, in India's remote past, ayurveda's sages described the means by which the radial pulse could be utilized to interpret the status of the physical and psychological constitutions of its possessor as well as to assess the overall state of health (or its absence). In the hands of an experienced and sensitive practitioner, pulse diagnosis (nadi pareeksha) can yield up a wealth of information of a very specific character well beyond the simple determination of prakruti and vikruti. It can lend assistance to locating the precise site(s) of pathology, the tissues affected and the state of the disease's progress and development, as well as the presence or absence of reactive systemic toxins that may lead to disease. Because pulse diagnosis requires a great sensitivity and deftness of the sense of touch that comes only with practice, it is as much an "art" as a science.

While pulse diagnosis has been cursorily described in several popular works on ayurveda, Dr. Lad has produced the first text on pulse diagnosis for the Western student practitioner, and "Secrets of the Pulse" provides a clear and straightforward method by which one can learn to assess the meanings of the pulse. With practice and the guidance afforded by this book, one can acquire the proficiency to read pulses accurately

A Good Sourcebook

I found this book very informative and helpful. I have put some of its knowledge into work already. Nonetheless, of course, it is very hard to teach the subtle intricasies of taking Ayurvedic pulses without a direct teacher. One day I hope to find one. This book probably does as well as anything can in the meanwhile, and it is nice to see such a througoh collection of these technqiues on paper. Glad I bought it.
