To support her regular troops, Austria made extensive use of auxiliary forces during the Revolutionary (1792-1802) and Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815). The Balkan Grenzers performed a mix of Military Frontier guard, field army and light roles, and were separated into the National Grenz regiments in 1798. French �migr�s, Belgian and Polish volunteers, German J�ger and Balkan refugees formed volunteer units in the 1790s, which were mostly regularised into Light Battalions (1798-1801).The militia garrison troops of 1800 were developed into the conscript Landwehr of 1808, although volunteers (Freiwillige) joined the field army in 1809. Hungary and Croatia provided traditional Insurrection militias that fought at Raab in 1809. About the Author
Dave Hollins was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1962. After graduating from University College London, he trained as a maritime solicitor and began his career in commercial shipping. He is a frequent contributor to specialist Napoleonic magazines and has written a number of books related to the Imperial Army and Archduke Charles. His previous work for Osprey includes MAA 299 Austrian Auxiliary Troops 1792-1816, and Warrior 24 Austrian Grenadiers and Infantry 1788-1816.

This book helps to fill in some gaps of general knowledge on the myriad of Austrian troops that appeared and disappeared during the Napoleonis era. Great fodder for miniature conversions and painters.

Book is a good beginning to learn about the Austrian Auxiliary troops during the years 1792-1816. It is an easy read and understand. If you are interested in the Uniforms of this time period it is very informative.

A welcome addition to the subject

Having seen the quality, to use the word loosely, of the other works on the Austrian Army in the Osprey series, seeing one written by an authority on his subject makes a welcome change. The author compliments his highly informative work with a number of contemporary uniform illustrations either previously unpublished or otherwise very difficult to find. Those that rely on later tertiary sources will, of course, have a problem with that, but then there are always those who prefer myth to history.
