Sweet love.

The love between these two was simply sweet. I must say, for a young man Billy knew what he wanted and would not back down. Paris was hesitant, and rightfully so given the time and place they lived in but Billy had no intentions of letting that fear override their feelings for each other. I loved that the story didn't harp on the rough times they faced during the 60's and 70's, it was mentioned but not the focus. The focus was all about the love of a younger Caucasian boy falling in love with a older African American girl in a time when that just wasn't tolerated. It moved a little fast at times but I absolutely enjoyed it. I loved them both, but Billy and his unyielding, unapologetic feelings for Paris stole my heart.

I love the actual idealism in this book

It's amusing how many people still view interracial relationships as a curiosity. Although many of us are mature, well informed and accepting it wasn't the same 30 or even 20 years ago and even sometimes today
.
This well written story deals with a realistic black woman whose grounded nature gets uprooted when am idealistic younger white man wants to court her. There is a cliche I've heard over the years, and it is usually made by the idealistic white member of the relationship, "I don't see color, I just see you." That is such a backward statement. Yes we all see color even when we love someone who is different. The problem is that the people who don't like the "mixing" only see in black and white.

Billy had that idealistic "I don't see color" mentality which is why, no matter how much he said it would be alright he would get incredibly angry when they were mistreated by intolerant white people. Where as Paris' father was prepared for trouble and took care of things when they were seen out in public together.

I appreciate Ms. Anderson's portrayal of the couple and the two things they shared, their love and sexual desire. It is not unrealistic to think that these two young people got horny and wanted more than just first, second and third bases. Anyone who has a problem with desire being a major part of the story is missing the point of him saving himself for her. It was a cherished gift he promised to give her on their wedding night. If they couldn't wait for their wedding night then the love and commitment would not have seemed as true. They could have given in at any time but that would have made them like everyone else who takes that aspect of marriage lightly.

I thought it was great that I was constantly waiting for the shoe to drop. But it might have been more realistic if something a little more serious happened as opposed to just being talked down or refused service.

My only twp criticisms would be that his dream of being a civil rights attorney somehow disappeared. I would have loved that to be part of his learning process and realization that just wanting to make things right doesn't guarantee that they will turn out that way. I would have liked them to interact with couples their age who were the same race or interracial. Friends they could socialize with so they wouldn't seem so solitary.

Otherwise it was a great read and I highly recommend it.

Set in Virginia of 1965. An interracial love affair begins.

The wrong place and the wrong time, just might be right. Forget about their families. The world's not to keen on the idea of them. Coming from two different world's, but raised without hate. Billy and Paris are two strangers that manage to form an undeniable connection on a deserted highway. That leads to falling in love.

Billy and Paris make a promises to their parents. Both in college and miles apart leads to restless night. Will they make it or will the outside tear them apart?

Matthew does, but he risks the lives of his family; Isabel wants revenge for a 300-year-old betrayal. Among its many flaws, this gripping ghost story ties up loose ends too quickly and conveniently in the last dozen pages. Taken as a whole, however, Belladonna is a pip.

From the title-pun--about a beautiful but deadly heroine--on: an intelligent, literate occult thriller that suffers from the melodramatic excess typical of Stewart's previous chillers (Grace, 1989, etc.). One night, while studying at Oxford in the 1970's, budding American historian Matthew Cavewood is visited and seduced by a mysterious young woman clad in garb typical of the 16th century-- the era of Matthew's specialty, genius alchemist Nathaniel Shawcrosse. The woman vanishes that night, but her memory haunts Matthew for the next 15 years; and so he's shocked when, in the house that he's bought near the Univ. of Virginia for his fianc‚e, Hazel, and her son, he detects the perfume that graced the woman that memorable night. Matthew's shock grows when, at the school- -where he's writing a biography of Shawcrosse--he sees a portrait of his mystery woman, whom he learns was Isabel Hardment, Shawcrosse's lover. Now obsessed with Isabel--and following in the footsteps of Shawcrosse, whose life's work evidently proved the reality of reincarnation--Matthew begins to use ancient, herbal drugs to try to contact Isabel. His erratic behavior frightens Hazel; but real trouble starts only after Isabel responds to Matthew's call and causes the fatal car crash of one of her descendants, whose body she invades and refashions into her own. The deliciously malicious Isabel then seduces Matthew in a torrid affair marked by arcane rituals and scorching sex; but when Hazel finds out, Matthew is forced to choose--and he chooses Hazel, setting the enraged Isabel, rejected similarly by Shawcrosse 300 years before, on a violent vendetta that threatens to engulf Hazel and son, Matthew, and herself. The multiclimax finale to this entertaining but oh-so- breathless tale features poison, a slashing, a hanging, incantations, and a breaching of the ``Gate'' that separates mind and matter. Mystery and magic

University lecturer and historian Matthew Cavewood has been given a grant to research and write a book on the life and work of Nathaniel Shawcross, a 17th century alchemist.As he probes deeper into Shawcross's life, he has several visitations from a beautiful young woman in 17th century dress and becomes increasingly drawn to her. When he researches herlife, he discovers that she was named Isabel and was hanged for the murder of Mary Shawcross, wife of her lover Nathaniel .Matthew marries Hazel and is happily living with her and her son from a previous marriage when he is encouraged by a faculty member at the university where he works, to delve even more deeply into the lives of Isabel and Nathaniel and, in doing so, is drawn into an obsession with the past which threatens his life and those of his family. If your taste is for murder mysteries with a touch of the occult, you will find this book fascinating.

Worth a look

This is, as all of Michael Stewart's books are, an entertaining story that should keep you interested from start to finish with some excellent scenes in the last 50 pges of the book. I honestly do not understand why Stewart is out of print, as both this and Monkeyshines are very readable and considerably better than a lot of what is on offer at the moment.

I have been searching for this book for years- i read it and then a friend never returned it. This book was a delightful twist of both mystery, romance, horror/suspence, and history. i truly was transported into the past along with the leading man. an excellent read-- i'm very disappointed that it's out of print!

L.C.B. Seaman's From Vienna to Versailles is a masterpiece by an extraordinary historian. In telling the story of what happened in Europe " from Vienna to Versailles," Seaman's presents us with delightfully interesting vignettes of all the main personages of that period - Metternich, Louis Napoleon, Cavour, Garibaldi, Clemenceau, Castleragh, etc. but what makes this great book even more interesting is that it is interpretive at every juncture. To every situation Seaman brings his own distinctive and well-argued interpretations and conclusions. Thus, when you finish reading this book you will feel not only more knowledgeable about the facts of this period, and how they related to one another, but more especially you will feel that you have been the beneficiary of a great coach in advising you on how interpret and evaluate all the main characters and turning points of this epochal period. Enjoy!

Excellent Addition to my reads.

Excellent book, but as noted somewhere in the reviews, you have to have some previous knowledge of the people mentioned in this book. I say this because the author will jump right into a situation with no real transition. In my case I did have to stop and read about some of the situations laid out in this book. I didn't think this was a big deal, but the book did take me 3 times as long to read.

All you Need to Pass the Test

I bought the Peerless Study Guide for the California contractor's license exam when it was recommended by a woman specializing in technical books for contractors. The subject matter is very dry. But if you work through a few pages every day over about two months, you will find yourself at the exam well prepared and confident. Peerless has numerous test exam questions in every chapter. For most of the questions, I took to heart the suggestion that I read only the correct answers (which are conveniently given at the bottom of every quiz page), and this helped set my memory with the right information.

In my case, I took a supplementary weekend cram course that I found valuable for the Law and Business portion of the exam, but it wasn't necessary if you are careful to read this book and take the practice exams a couple of times.

Avoid!

I am completely astonished with the poor quality of this book. There are typos everywhere and the questions and answers sections are full of incorrect answers! How in the world can a company publish a study guide that is riddled with inaccurate information like this?? Amazing that this company would even issue this book! It seems as though it was proof read by an illiterate person with no knowledge of the electrical code, or perhaps not even proof read at all.

Passed first time with no study but this book. Very informative, maybe too informative. Touched every subject that was asked on the exam. Well worth the price and a keeper to fall back on and review forgotten subject areas. I spread the reading out within a three month period and crunched in all the practice exams day before and couple hours before the exam.

Vast knowledge in very digestable form

As frightening as the volume of the book might see, it is written very well and it is very contemporary with the topics discussed in.
The book is divided in several sections with general theory and implications disussed first and with some real cases presented afterwards. Each case is usually backed with some questions to think about and to extract the essence of it. The complete book feels like being a student in the class with authors performing as teachers (as they also do sometimes).
Concepts of strategy are extremely tricky. It can hardly been negotiated if there is a strategy or if you just got to have the feeling or if there simply are people who earn 1 million US$+ a year that turn into gold everything they touch and you can't run a serious business without them. This book will help you understand that strategy exists, will teach you how to define it and set it through and how to predict the future and react on it. But as real life is, many things can happen. You get the driver's licence after you learn the basics of driving. But no one can tell after you get the licence if you will get involved into the crash and when.
Many people expect from such books that they will get a broad pavement covered with roses to walk through their careers on simply by paying some 70 US$. How naive they sound sometimes. Life Changing

When I became a Christian I felt such incredible freedom. Unfortunately, it didn't last long because I was quickly taught that to keep God happy I needed to do my part by keeping my life free of sin. Week after week I felt like a complete failure as a Christian because I was unable to live up to the "holy" life that I felt called to live. Struggling against my sin, the excitement and joy that was once the cornerstone of my salvation faded and instead I only had moments of freedom followed by moments of disappointment. The roller coaster was brutal.

When I first joined Grace Church and began hearing Clark Whitten speak on the message of grace it truly was "life changing". At first I (like many others) wondered, "what's the big deal about grace?" After all, I understood that we were saved by grace. What I didn't understand was just how complete the finished work of Christ really was! The truths contained within this book are things that Clark has been preaching for years. One of the key moments for me is when He said, "God not only did his part in this plan for redeeming mankind but He did MY part as well through His son Jesus!" God had done MY PART! I WAS Holy! This journey has radically changed my life and my walk with God hasn't been on a roller coaster since.

This book should be mandatory reading! It isn't the Bible. However, it directly attacks the legalism that has gripped the church for hundreds of years. Clark speaks with such conviction and passion through this book and I guarantee this WILL change your life. Be open minded even if you are skeptical or think that it's some form of heresy. Allow God to speak to you through the pages because this isn't a "new truth" but instead it is exactly what the Bible says about what Christ came and died for.

I've had to completely reread the Bible because I had read it wrong for so many years. What a dangerous and disastrous mistake. I'm so thankful for this book and for the truth contained within.

Legalists Beware! You might get set free :)

I have been a Christ follower for over 30 years and I've never read a book that explains so well the reason for my performance-based believing. I started my journey with Christ when I was 18 years old and had a radical conversion that was incredibly joyful and free. During the years of my walk with Christ I allowed the leaven of the law to corrupt my mind and cause me to turn back to a "doing" message, not a "being" message. I was doing so much for God that I stumbled around for many years in defeat, depression, discouragement and condemnation, even though I knew this was not the Kingdom of God life that I had experienced earlier in my walk with Him. I knew something was amiss, but I just couldn't put a finger on it. I prayed more, read the bible more, went to Church more, got involved more, tried hard to sin less, but nothing really helped. About 6 years ago I heard a message on grace that impacted me in a profound way; to the point of restoring my sanity and showing me that God isn't mad at me - because I'm in Christ and He's in me. This was the spark that started the fire of grace in my life. Since then I have been listening to a lot of teaching on grace and have really grown in my understanding of who I am in Christ; forgiven, justified and sanctified. We've been so wired to view God as disinterested and distant by much of the modern teaching of Christianity, that we've forgotten how much He really loves and cherishes us. In turn, we are free to live for Him and glorify Him every day - not under compulsion, but because we want to.

Pastor Whitten has boiled down the essence of the true Good News of what Jesus Christ has done in order that we might be free to live the abundant life in Him, which He promised. This book is a must read for every believer. It will make the legalists mad, but it will set free those who have been bound in a prison of their own making, who truly want to be free to follow Christ in a true and living way. I would give it 10 stars if I could!

There's so much more I could say about this great book, but I'll just let you read it and find the beauty and joy that comes from reading it for yourself. You won't regret it (unless you're just determined to be miserable by trying to please God in your own strength).

Pure Grace, Pure Truth

I've read many books over the years concerning Christianity and salvation. Other than the Holy Bible itself, very few have impacted my spiritual walk with Jesus Christ more than "Pure Grace". Pastor Clark Whitten explains in very understandable terms just what it means to be saved by God's grace. Through scripture Pastor Whitten explains that the reality of pure grace, uncontaminated by the law of sin and death should be the reality for all Believers. Legalism and religion are at odds with true grace. Jesus did it all. As followers of Christ, we dare not deminish how completely His sacrifice saved us, perfected us and sanctified us. "Pure Grace" also explains how God's love is the greatest deterrent to sin. Legalism will only frustrate and discourage a believer. God's " Pure Grace" will set him free.

This is a fascinating book because it is incredible. At the age of 41, Trump, the son of a Queens, New York, developer of moderate-income apartment houses, presides over a vast real estate empire with assets in the billions. Trump's world is composed of an endless series of deals and ventures, most of them monumentally successful from his point of view. The book is less an autobiography than an hour-by-hour recapitulation of how Trump spends his time plus a few lessons for those who would do the same. About the Author

This is Rick Carson's fourth book for HarperCollins. His seminal work, Taming Your Gremlin�, has had a remarkable track record. He is a former faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and a clinical member and approved supervisor for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Review by professional life coach, this is simple and powerful

This is a simply written book that contains very powerful and useful ideas about managing your inner critic. It focuses on mindfulness of your process and disidentifying with the voices in your head that undermine you on a daily basis.

Some of the keys to this approach are being curious rather than critical about what is happening in the moment. This leads to an awareness that allows one to penetrate old conditioned patterns and achieve a state a heightened state of awareness that leads to conscious choice rather than unconscious acting out. It also encourages a playful and experimental approach to playing with new options which is helpful for people who take themselves seriously and have difficulty trying on new behaviors.

This book is fun to read, but like some of the other reviews, I agree that the metaphor of the "gremlin" is pushed to its limits of usefulness. On the other hand, the book is quite entertaining. I must admit at times I found myself annoyed by the recurring gremlin analogies, but I know other people who have read this found it to be a strong point.

The exercises in this book are very good and like that the author included space in the book to record observations and written answers from exercises. In short, this is a great tool for self inquiry and a good companion to combine with counseling or life coaching.

A Spanish teacher must have

Spanish Teacher's Book of Instant Word Games: Over 160 Ready-To-Use Activities, Puzzles, and Worksheets for Grades 7-12 by Josephine Carre�o is a must. Besides the many activities (that can be photocopied) to make a unit fun or to leave activities for a sub at the last minute, the unit about cognates is very thorough. It expands students vocabulary because it helps them recognize how many words Spanish and English have in common. It's also a tool for better reading comprehension because they learn also about false cognates at the end of the unit. Unit 1 is all about geography and includes a vocabulary of different words for the same object in different countries. My only criticism is the illustrations; they are not very attractive and some are rather obscure. From a teachers perspective this book is a good addition to any Spanish class.

Disappointed

I teach level 1 and 2 Spanish. I was very disappointed that I will not have a use for this book after I paid so much for it. The activities do not align with my text vocab or my State Standards. Some of the puzzles are confusing and the difficulty is beyond the 7 -12 ability. In order to use many of the activities I would have to modify them to the point that it is no longer worth it. If I had had the opportunity to preview the book first I would have never bought it. Shame too, because I am sure a lot of work went into putting it together.

too hard for lower levels, illustrations and print too old

I am always looking for ideas, and the price was OK, but the contents are really old and presented in an old-fashioned way, without graphic diagrams, charts or images. I can't use it with my Middle School kids. The type of print is like an old type writer, small and dry, and the illustrations appear handmade without much detail or description. Not useful for early High School either, when their attention is still so visually directed; also the levels and structures do not fit in with current contextual structure teaching. I kept it just in case, and because the shipping makes it cost more than it is all worth, but I would not buy it, and I will be reluctant to buy another book without the "look inside" feature
