Great read, from start to finish! Thanks, Robert Greene ;)

This is a controversial book, mostly because the average person wishes the world were peaceful, friendly, and not full of chaos and drama...

Well, unfortunately, wishes don't make it a reality, and there are people out there who prey on the weak and take advantage of those who are too trusting. The 48 Laws of Power (by Robert Greene) illuminates many ways that those predatory people can gain power over anyone who is not aware of the manipulation and power games they play. And while it may take some practice, study, and a keen eye for detail, anyone can learn to spot these (often subtle) power struggles and often even turn the tables on the enemy at hand!

Please, if you are considering reading this book but are 'on the fence' about it because of the people saying negative things about it, just read it! This has become one of my favorite books in a short period of time, and it has given me a new way to perceive the world around me. Robert Greene is a great author, and the way this book is formatted / written makes it educational, entertaining, and compelling, all at the same time. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to every single person in the world, because it is not for the faint of heart; but if you've ever been taken advantage of, shut out of someone's life, lost control of a situation, had someone feign authority over you (successfully), had relationship problems, problems in the workplace, etc, you deserve to give this a read-through at LEAST once. Don't take everything at face-value... and by that I mean don't decapitate anyone for "transgression" of any of the laws, but definitely think about times you have seen these laws at work, and how a grasp on a relevant law from the book could have changed the outcome of that particular scenario.

.Long story short, this is an amazing book! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :)

It's like history's greatest hits!

What is the best strategy book of all time? The Prince by Machiavelli, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Book of Five Rings by Musashi? What about where the greatest war stories come from? Ancient Greece, medieval Europe, or perhaps China's dynastic period? Throw in any ancient war strategy and political history book, and most likely Robert Greene has analysed them in the contextual manner within 48 theories that become his laws of power.

It has the brilliant war strategies used by Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington and Mao Tse Tung, the ruthlessness of Ivan the Terrible, John D Rockefeller and Henry VIII, and the wisdoms of Roman Emperors and ancient Japanese tea masters. It is heavy with the tricks and lies used by Henry Kissinger and Otto Von Bismarck, the masterclass diplomacy of Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, or the seductive techniques of the mythical Mata Hari and the many European mistresses. It also analyses the mistakes made even by great men like Xerses and Cyrus the Great, the fraud by con artists such as Panco Villa and Yellow Kid Weil, the camouflaging move made by Ethopian emperor Haile Selassie and Elizabeth I, and the behind the scene moves by Cosimo de Medici to rule Florence.

In between the stories there are writings by the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Machiavelli, Sun Tzu and Baltasar Gracián, and many fables, proverbs and quotations fittingly appropriate within the subject matters. And between the myths, frauds, scandals and tragedies we'll learn about the structure of past societies and how it changes overtime. Indeed, Robert Greene has successfully managed to bring the biggest characters in history to life and even able to portray them as ordinary emotional human beings, but, crucially, human beings who posses winning strategies.

It is by far the most comperensive history book I've ever read, and it got to be the book I've read at the slowest pace. I read and re-read it, highlighted and made lots of notes, and actually made several changes in the way I analyse things, in the way I behave and in understanding other people's behaviours.

Einstein once said that the secret of creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. This book has become an analysis tool so valuable that I hesitated for a while on whether or not I should write a review and reveal my sources. You know what, don't read this book. It's a waste of time and it won't do you any good.

When trash and scumbags rule the world, only more trash and scumbags will be born

This is a great book if you want to have the Armor of Knowledge equipped in your head. Certain laws contradict each other but the whole point is to use them when the need arises. There's 48 laws while during my lifetime, I will have countless encounters with people I prefer to avoid. Not just the workplace but school and real life I see not just stupid people but deceiving, narcissistic, and self-absorbed who want to shove your views down your throat. You can get respond back and crush their spirit (Law 15) or leave them alone for the insects that they are (Law 36). This book may be looked as manipulative but the people who have used these laws have their names carved onto History. And as a result, the Author has broken down their actions of the past and turned them into a guide on how to help and instruct the reader on how to master himself or herself and take on the world.
But then again this is how certain trash and scumbags are born. Genghis Khan, Count Victor Lustig, Yellow Kid Weil, King Henry (don't know which one), Mao Zedong (He lowkey uses this Man a lot). I'm giving this 4 stars outta 5 because there's some laws I wouldn't use. Maybe because I'm a nice guy but I prefer not to have ghosts from the past haunting my behind. The IRS can do that.

About the Author
Robert Fisk is Foreign Correspondent of the London Independent, based in the Middle East. An expert on Middle Eastern affairs and contemporary global conflicts, he has won more British and international journalism awards than any other foreign correspondent and is a seven-time winner of the British Press Award's Foreign Reporter of the Year award. He is the bestselling author of a number of books including The Point of No Return (1975), Pity the Nation (2001) and The Great War for Civilisation (2005). He lives between Beirut, Paris and Dublin.

Well researched and readable.

This book deals with Irish neutrality during the second world war. There are many myths attached to Irish neutrallity, stories of the IRA refeulling U-boats and threats of aggression from Britian. This book goes to the source and destroys the rumours, and holds up the facts. It also goes deeply into the political undercurrents that kept Ireland out of the second world war. Ireland held (in the first half of WWII) an extremely important strategic position. The british had abandonned three navy ports (against the advice of Winston Churchill) which would have protected the atlantic convoys against the german u-boats in 1938. Had these ports not been abandonned it is probable that the Irish could not have been neutral. The british only threatened to Invade the "Irish Free state" if they were being starved out by the U boat blockade, and would only have done this to re take the strategic ports. Interestingly the IRA were hunted down on both sides of the partition and several were hung in Dubblin during WWII. The IRA in NI were pro nazi, but there is no evidence for them helping in any significant way the Nazis. For students of Irish history this would make a very good begining point, the 1940's and WWII are not too distant in history and it looks back in enough detail to give the causes for the actions in the first half of the 1940's and sets the scene for the Irish declaration of the republic in 1947, and the subsequent absorbtion of NI into the UK in 1949. Another interesting fact is how the german bombings of Dubblin and Belfast had an enormous effect on the population there. Although light in comparison to the treatment dealt out to English cities the population of belfast was terrified into sleeping outside in the countryside. The population of Dubblin, far from being incensed at the germans bombing them, held tighter to neutrallity. Also of interest is the fact the Roseavelt wanted to invade Eire to use the strategic ports. This book destroyed alot of myths for me, and let me understand the politics of the Island alot better.

This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in the subject of Irish neutrality during WW II. Fisk, the great British journalist reported for the London Times from Belfast from 1972 to 1975 and has a PhD from Dublin's Trinity University so he knows something about Ireland although the book also reveals his lack of understanding of and sympathy for Catholic Ireland and, oddly, its people, who play little part in the book, probably because Fisk himself is a "little Brit" who at the time he wrote the book anyway apparently thought all moral righteousness was on the allied side (although he mentions allied firestorm civilian bombings of Dresden, Hamburg etc. only in very, very brief passing, seemingly believes all the Nuremburg atrocity stories even though many have now been discreetly discredited and dropped, and seems to think the Spanish civil war involved noble good guys who lost fighting "fascism" -- in other words he seems to have been been somewhat of a lefty). His more recent writings seem to take a more balanced and negative view of our recent warfare and its ugly details.

He also seems from time to time not able to make up his mind about the interpretation of events. Example: In summing up De Valera's stubborn and successful defense of neutrality which kept Ireland's people out of the horrors of the war he calls it "the abnormal nature of the political path De Valera had chosen to follow" at one point, then shortly later in criticizing Churchill's misunderstanding of the Irish viewpoint he says, "the Irish were in the very process of regaining their soul -- their political independence -- by remaining neutral". The book is replete with this kind of thing. As an Irish fisherman watched the allied aircraft passing overhead on the way to the Normandy invasion beaches he says "The war was passing Ireland by!" Too bad for the unlucky fisherman?

But this kind of thing does not detract from the essential fair reporting and massive research in this book. It will not please partisans of extreme Irish nationalism nor British imperialism and Ulster sectarianism on the other hand and supplies much interesting historical information. In his usual style Fisk speaks the truth to power and lets the chips fall where they may.

My conclusion is that Eamon de Valera comes out as a greater figure than for Fisk wishes to give him credit. He kept his people out of a horrible, bloody war in which there was no nobility although Fisk seems to think God was on the British side. I think He was at Dev's side.

"I have used different editions of this book for the past 8 years. This remains the only text in the market that offers a comprehensive source of everything and anything to do with Human Resource Management cases, vignettes and skill builders. Further, what appeals to me the most is the sheer variety of choices for each topic. One can choose from a comprehensive/integrative case that challenges students to analyze information from a variety of perspectives and encourages them to generate solutions that capture an integrated approach to HRM. One has a choice of shorter cases called 'incidents" that succinctly capture a key issue or a theme. These shorter cases and incidents have been updated each time to reflect the current trends in HR - from safety and violence at work, to freedom of speech, illegal immigration and so on. Then there are several hands-on practical exercises and skill-builders that my students simply love because they get to actually get their hands dirty and engage in a particular HR activity within the safety of a classroom environment or at home. Many of my students actually keep the book after the class is over and use these skill-builders and exercises to train and/or coach their co-workers and subordinates. About the Author
Stella M. Nkomo serves as professor in the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Pretoria. She is the former chair of the Department of Management at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina. She holds a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Nkomo is a former Scholar-in-Residence at the Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College and Harvard University. Dr. Nkomo's nationally recognized work on race and gender in organizations, managing diversity, leading change, and human resource management appears in numerous journals, edited volumes, and magazines. She has served on the editorial board of several management journals, including the Academy of Management Review; Organization; British Journal of Management; the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal; Journal of Managerial Psychology; Management Communication Quarterly; Work and Occupations; and the Journal of Management Education. She has written three successful books and is a former member of the executive board of the Human Resource Management Division of the Academy of Management. Most recently, she served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. Dr. Nkomo has received numerous honors, including the Gender and Diversity in Organization Division Sage Scholarly Contributions Award in 2009. She received the Belk College of Business Research Excellence Award and the Bank of America Teaching Excellence Award during her tenure at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Nkomo also served on the Board of Governors of the Center for Creative Leadership. At the University of South Africa she received three awards for significant contributions to research.

Myron D. Fottler is Professor of Health Care Administration and Executive Director of Programs in Health Care Administration at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. Previously, he served as Professor and Director of the Ph.D. Program in Administration-Health Services at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received his M.B.A. from Boston University and his Ph.D. in Business from Columbia University. His research interests include all areas of health services administration as well as stakeholder management, strategic human resources management, job design, and the impact of organizational restructuring. Dr. Fottler has served on a number of editorial review boards and currently serves on the editorial boards for Medical Care Research and Review and the Health Care Management Review. He is the founding and continuing co-editor of Advances in Health Care Management, an annual research volume. He has written 20 books, including numerous recent books focused on HR and strategic thinking for the healthcare industry. He has also written 140 journal articles and his research has won awards from the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Association of Medical Administrators, and the Healthcare Management Division of the Academy of Management. He is a former Chair of the Heathcare Management Division of the Academy of Management and the Doctoral Education Faculty Forum of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. His biography has been listed in numerous biographical publications, including International Dictionary of Business and Management Scholars, and Dictionary of American Scholars.

R. Bruce McAfee is an Eminent Professor of Management at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He has a M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, a M.A. from the University of Detroit, and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University. He has written 10 popular HR books, including ORGANIZATION BEHAVIOR, EFFECTIVELY MANAGING TROUBLESOME EMPLOYEES, PRODUCTIVITY STRATEGIES, and APPLICATIONS IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT. He has also written more than 50 articles and conducted more than 50 in-house training sessions for various corporations.

Explain what products this is available on

I purchased this text book because it said I could download to my Kindle touch. When I downloaded it my touch said I could not use with this product. When I called for support I was told it could be done on Ipad, or Android Kindle. Fortunately I have a tablet that I could download the software onto to use my textbook but it would have been nice to know what systems the book would work on before I purchased it.

About the Author
Joseph Kerman was a leading musicologist, music critic, and music educator from the 1950s into the 2000s. He conceived Listen together with his wife, Vivian Kerman, and was its original author. From his first book, Opera as Drama (1956), to his last, Opera and the Morbidity of Music (2008), including studies of Bach, Beethoven, William Byrd, concertos, and more, Kerman reshaped our understanding and appreciation of Western Classical music. He was long a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he served two terms as chair of the Music Department.

Gary Tomlinson did the same at the University of Pennsylvania before he moved to Yale University in 2011, where he is now the John Hay Whitney Professor and Director of the Whitney Humanities Center. A former MacArthur Fellow, he has authored books on Claudio Monteverdi, Renaissance musical culture, opera, and the singing rituals of the Aztecs and Incas. His latest book, 1,000,000 Years of Music, describes the evolutionary emergence of music.

Teaching was the heart and soul of Kerman’s musical career, and it remains such in Tomlinson’s. Between them, their wide-ranging course offerings have encompassed harmony and ear-training, opera, world music, popular music, interdisciplinary studies, seminars in music history, criticism, and anthropology and—many times over—Introduction to Music for non-majors.

Tomlinson and Kerman worked together on five editions of Listen. Joseph Kerman died early in 2014, just shy of his 90th birthday, as this edition went to press.

Nothing stuffy about this Nobel winner! If you ever wanted to know about how science can be creative, this book is a great one stop shop. The story is easy to follow because it is real, clearly not embellished. I finished it in a day of pleasure.

This book, Dancing Naked in the Mind Field, was so enthralling that I almost read it through literally in one sitting after randomly flipping it open and sitting down to finish the paragraph I first set my eyes on. I came to Amazon excited to give it a positive review and was surprised to find the high number of negative reviews. As far as I can tell, many of the negative reviewers don't understand the author or the point of this book.

Reviewers who describe Mullis as a sloppy, irresponsible scientist who just got lucky need to reflect on the fact that he was recruited by Cetus (the company he was working at when he developed PCR), which also saw fit to put him in charge of a research team. This was all before the Nobel prize; he was making traditional professional progress without celebrity.

One of the things that's clear from the book is that Mullis has a deep life-long concern with systemic power structures and the way they warp both our lives and scientific research. So, for example, critics of his views on HIV/AIDS fail to see that he took a position on the topic after one of his friends was ostracized from the professional community for having the "wrong" views in the early days when AIDS research was new and less settled. The same is true of the OJ Simpson trial, which excited Mullis less because he thought so highly of OJ than because he wanted a chance to take down the enormous and overwhelmingly powerful bureaucracy of the LA prosecutor's office. Likewise, astrology is less about whether the stars affect our personality than about the largely unscientific and ineffective field of mental health.

The other face of Mullis' anti-institutional views is a type of humanism, which leads him to say things that, frankly, make perfect sense to me. NASA spends huge amounts of money on the shuttle program and international space station. What the heck are we getting out of it? Why don't we focus first on figuring out how to protect ourselves from natural threats (like the decimation of life from an asteroid impact) before figuring out how to set up a Mars colony. A Mars colony might be exciting, but it's not very practical and isn't doing anything for the man on the street. At one point, he suggests we might just be better off with priests of medieval religion than with priests of modern science. This is similar to the criticisms Nassim Taleb has been making of our priests of Wall Street, and I think it makes sense.

The writing is fast-moving and humor-filled, although inconsistent. I don't know who came up with the clunky title, but most of the book is wittier. He discusses the fact that his wife Nancy encouraged him in writing this book and then edited it. Some parts about PCR are dumbed down versions of his Nobel Prize lecture, so I suspect his wife encouraged him to write something that would be accessible to the general public but still get across his message that we should turn off the TV, do good science, and enjoy the ride.

A Fleeting Glimpse of a True Scientist, American and Thinker

I love and hate this book at the same time. Kary Mullis is absolutely brilliant. His pragmatic thinking, scientific integrity, and bruising rationality are a rarity in a dumbed down world where pop science has replaced anything resembling the pure pursuit of scientific truth. And it is this fact that makes the book so good and yet so agonizing. Dr Mullis presents clear lines of logic on a number of common topics, that challenge everything you thought you knew, yet seem so undeniably right and logical. His ability to simply convey scientific concepts is rivaled only by his no holds barred descriptions of a life thoroughly lived and far from the conventional. To the extent that it excites, entertains, and teaches you, it will simultaneously disappoint you with truths and honest assessments of the world that Mullis makes no attempt to sugar coat. While you, like me, may love this book, at some point you will hate Mullis for being both so honest and so right. Nonetheless, such a fresh perspective in an otherwise pulp, pop and carbon copy world, provides an entertainment experience that would make even the best novelist envious. Mullis gives us a peek into the Taboo, reflections on topics, you've probably never thought much about, and compelling arguments against things you swore were fact. The fact that so much of it is true only adds to the intrigue. Whether you are a scientist, or everyman, thinker or casual observer, this book has something to entertain, enlighten and challenge you. A must read. This book is just fantastic.
