It doesn't get any more meta than this odd prequel, which recounts Hamlet's early years as a student at Wittenberg University. After Horatio, who narrates and quickly becomes obsessed with the beautiful Hamlet, is asked to translate and stage a play by the wealthy merchant Baron de Maricourt and his wife, Lady Adriane (who shows a marked weakness for writers), Horatio casts Hamlet in a major role—that of a young woman—as a way of getting to spend time in his company. Soon, Horatio undertakes a series of sonnets to immortalize Hamlet, but when Adriane gets wind of Horatio's new project, she begins to interfere. Further complications arise with the arrival of a playwright named Will Shake-spear who threatens to usurp Horatio's position with Lady Adriane and Hamlet. Filled with out-of-context quotes from Hamlet, confusions in sexual identity more commonly found in Shakespeare's comedies, and cameo appearances by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the novel too self-consciously repurposes elements from Shakespeare's tragedy, rendering this a colorful if incidental prologue to the tragic events at Elsinore Castle. This witty, erudite, and decidedly sexy novel stands all of the usual questions about Shakespeare on end. Horatio, a scholar, catches the eye of the beautiful and flamboyant Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. At the same time, Horatio also becomes involved with his patroness, the dark Lady Adriane. When she hires him to write poems about his love for Hamlet, it sets a chain of surprising events in motion. Combining famous lines of dialogue and plot from several plays, Hermes manages to create both a moving story that stands on its own, and a giant in-joke for Shakespeare lovers. At times, the Shakespeare references threaten to overshadow and bog down the story being told, but in the end, the characters she’s created are strong enough to carry the novel. --Marta Segal Block

Tantalizing style, wit, and poise!

Others have explained the general plot of this marvelously crafted gem, so I will explain why I could not put down this book. The vocabulary is rich, the style is believably crafted to imitate the dialogue and musings of a 16th-century poet, and the imagery and figurative language are refreshingly unlike anything I have read in the past five years. I have a passion for Shakespeare's work in general (and "Hamlet" specifically) and I felt as if this book was written specifically to make me happy; it revisits and expounds upon some of The Bard's most notorious characters with great skill. In fact, I couldn't bear to be outside of 5 feet at all times while in the middle of this novel.
The plot has at its center a love triangle, and while this may not be considered the most original pivot upon which to turn a story, the complicated passion, intrigue, and interwoven tapestry of vibrant characters charmed me absolutely. Hamlet is beautiful and larger than life, a perfect foil to the mysterious Dark Mistress and Horatio, caught in the middle, documents the entire ordeal with frank descriptions of its sensuality and torment. In a word, this book is Delicious!

If Rosencranz and Guildenstern Can Get Their Own Play...

... Why shouldn't Horatio become the main character in his own story? After all, hasn't that glory-hound, Hamlet, gotten enough attention? But, hush, this is no comedy! Horatio is a poor scholar at Wittenberg University, caught in a post-graduate limbo of study and teaching when several things change. He gets a commission to write a play from a Baron who has an intriguing dark lady of a wife, and he meets the beautiful Prince of Denmark, perpetual student and rebel who sweeps all into his circle, like moths to a flame, and he falls desperately in love.
Shakespearean quotes, misquotes, references and characters are choc-a-bloc and should delight Hamlet and Sonnet fans particularly. R & G even get fairly big roles. Hamlet remains larger than life, but there is a grounding in a kind of reality here that makes the reader feel they are not limited to a small enclosed stage. And it gives some real feeling to Horatio as a struggling poet, lover and man, conflicted and uncertain, genius and witting pawn. The meeting of Horatio and Hamlet is haunting, dreamlike and strange. It is worth reading for that and other things, although I was left at the end wondering if it were all just sound and fury.

"Shakespeare topsy-turvy"

If you are a Shakespeare fan in any measure - The Lunatic, The Lover, and the Poet by Myrlin A. Hermes is certainly worth reading. Like his plays, there is cross-dressing, disguises, mistaken identities, intrigues, existential crises, bawdy humor, puns all over the place, sex, and of course, a heart-aching love story in the center. Two, in fact. Remember the mysterious dark lady of Shakespeare's sonnets? Horatio, Hamlet's loyal friend? And countless theories on who really wrote the famous plays? Hermes takes all of these elements, borrows some of the best iambic pentameter ever written, and puts it all together to turn "Shakespeare topsy-turvy."
Fictional characters take on lives of their own to form a clever and unique perspective: What if Shakespeare had been in love with both the dark lady and the Prince of Denmark?
Hermes weaves the sonnets with a fair amount of bits and pieces from all the major plays to tell this tale, but Hamlet (the text and the character) takes center stage here. This Hamlet is a dazzlingly beautiful and charismatic man - attractive to both the sexes (A woman's face with Nature's own hand painted/Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion). Horatio, student by day/poet by night, succumbs to Hamlet's spell and falls in love for the first time in his life.
But wait - Horatio is also seduced, to his surprise, by his patron's intelligent but unattractive wife (my mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun). Between these two opposite loves, the bewildered Horatio must choose and his poetry is all the better for it. And as if this tragi-comedic love triangle weren't enough, Hermes also manages to rewrite Hamlet from beginning to end in a surprisingly inventive and plausible manner.
"Have we such a perfect amity?" he asked. "Would you be such a friend...and pledge your life for mine, and keep my place, if I had such a need?"....."Swear it!" Hamlet's eyes stared wells into mine. I put my hand to my heart, having naught to swear by....
"At once, I felt my universe shift. My heart leaped from my chest, and when it returned again, it beat at odds. I had become an instrument, and turned to Hamlet's key. My mind was trued to Hamlet's truth, aligned with Hamlet's mind in such perfect marriage, it seemed the most natural conclusion in the world when he rose up to seal the vow with a kiss."
Hermes undoubtedly knows Shakespeare inside and out. Each page has some sort of creatively placed allusion to a play or sonnet; I know I didn't get half of them (Make a game of it and try to spot every reference - there's a ton!). I don't think The Lunatic, The Lover, and the Poet by Myrlin A. Hermes can be appreciated without having read at least Hamlet and some of Shakespeare's more famous sonnets, but no worries - you need not be a Shakespeare scholar to enjoy this entertaining, multi-layered book.
