this book is a great one stop shop

Nothing stuffy about this Nobel winner! If you ever wanted to know about how science can be creative, this book is a great one stop shop. The story is easy to follow because it is real, clearly not embellished. I finished it in a day of pleasure.

This book, Dancing Naked in the Mind Field, was so enthralling that I almost read it through literally in one sitting after randomly flipping it open and sitting down to finish the paragraph I first set my eyes on. I came to Amazon excited to give it a positive review and was surprised to find the high number of negative reviews. As far as I can tell, many of the negative reviewers don't understand the author or the point of this book.

Reviewers who describe Mullis as a sloppy, irresponsible scientist who just got lucky need to reflect on the fact that he was recruited by Cetus (the company he was working at when he developed PCR), which also saw fit to put him in charge of a research team. This was all before the Nobel prize; he was making traditional professional progress without celebrity.

One of the things that's clear from the book is that Mullis has a deep life-long concern with systemic power structures and the way they warp both our lives and scientific research. So, for example, critics of his views on HIV/AIDS fail to see that he took a position on the topic after one of his friends was ostracized from the professional community for having the "wrong" views in the early days when AIDS research was new and less settled. The same is true of the OJ Simpson trial, which excited Mullis less because he thought so highly of OJ than because he wanted a chance to take down the enormous and overwhelmingly powerful bureaucracy of the LA prosecutor's office. Likewise, astrology is less about whether the stars affect our personality than about the largely unscientific and ineffective field of mental health.

The other face of Mullis' anti-institutional views is a type of humanism, which leads him to say things that, frankly, make perfect sense to me. NASA spends huge amounts of money on the shuttle program and international space station. What the heck are we getting out of it? Why don't we focus first on figuring out how to protect ourselves from natural threats (like the decimation of life from an asteroid impact) before figuring out how to set up a Mars colony. A Mars colony might be exciting, but it's not very practical and isn't doing anything for the man on the street. At one point, he suggests we might just be better off with priests of medieval religion than with priests of modern science. This is similar to the criticisms Nassim Taleb has been making of our priests of Wall Street, and I think it makes sense.

The writing is fast-moving and humor-filled, although inconsistent. I don't know who came up with the clunky title, but most of the book is wittier. He discusses the fact that his wife Nancy encouraged him in writing this book and then edited it. Some parts about PCR are dumbed down versions of his Nobel Prize lecture, so I suspect his wife encouraged him to write something that would be accessible to the general public but still get across his message that we should turn off the TV, do good science, and enjoy the ride.

A Fleeting Glimpse of a True Scientist, American and Thinker

I love and hate this book at the same time. Kary Mullis is absolutely brilliant. His pragmatic thinking, scientific integrity, and bruising rationality are a rarity in a dumbed down world where pop science has replaced anything resembling the pure pursuit of scientific truth. And it is this fact that makes the book so good and yet so agonizing. Dr Mullis presents clear lines of logic on a number of common topics, that challenge everything you thought you knew, yet seem so undeniably right and logical. His ability to simply convey scientific concepts is rivaled only by his no holds barred descriptions of a life thoroughly lived and far from the conventional. To the extent that it excites, entertains, and teaches you, it will simultaneously disappoint you with truths and honest assessments of the world that Mullis makes no attempt to sugar coat. While you, like me, may love this book, at some point you will hate Mullis for being both so honest and so right. Nonetheless, such a fresh perspective in an otherwise pulp, pop and carbon copy world, provides an entertainment experience that would make even the best novelist envious. Mullis gives us a peek into the Taboo, reflections on topics, you've probably never thought much about, and compelling arguments against things you swore were fact. The fact that so much of it is true only adds to the intrigue. Whether you are a scientist, or everyman, thinker or casual observer, this book has something to entertain, enlighten and challenge you. A must read. This book is just fantastic.

The fifth edition of Sophie Levitt's book "Treatment of Cerebral Palsy and Motor Delay" belongs on the book shelves of every Cerebral Palsy Treatment Centre, or Child Development Centre. Ms. Levitt has created a book which incorporates both solid treatment suggestions and current principles of family centered care, cultural sensitivity and close inter-professional collaboration. Throughout the book there is emphasis on respect for the goals and priorities of the family and the child with CP, and the importance of blending therapy with play. The child is not seen as a passive recipient of treatment, but an active participant.

This book includes an up to date chapter on evidence based practice, which can assist the clinician in the evaluation of research studies and the development of research protocols. A practical approach to assessment describes observational assessment as well as many standardized assessment tools, their specific purpose, and application in the development of treatment plans.

But it is the wealth of specific treatment suggestions and activities based on Ms. Levitt's extensive experience and her collaboration with expert clinicians from around the world which sets this book apart. Activities which are organized according to the starting positions and motor development of the child are well described. Bill's book is not only chuck full of solid data that supports his thoughts on men, women and sexuality, but it is beautiful to look at and peruse through. As a businesswoman myself, Bill's explanation of the sexual dynamic in business circles was profound and even funny at times. She is the head of the Finance department of the university, and is also the chair of the finance subcommittee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Her expertise covers loan systems, risk management, and more recently, network analysis. She has led several research projects in student loan design, liquidity management, heterogeneous agent models, and systemic risk.

Ferenc Illes

Ferenc Illes has an MSc degree in mathematics from Eotvos Lorand University. A few years after graduation, he started studying actuarial and financial mathematics, and he is about to pursue his PhD from Corvinus University of Budapest. In recent years, he has worked in the banking industry. Currently, he is developing statistical models with R. His interest lies in large networks and computational complexity.

Milan Badics

Milan Badics has a master's degree in finance from the Corvinus University of Budapest. Now, he is a PhD student and a member of the PADS PhD scholarship program. He teaches financial econometrics, and his main research topics are time series forecasting with data-mining methods, financial signal processing, and numerical sensitivity analysis on interest rate models. He won the competition of the X. Kochmeister-prize organized by the Hungarian Stock Exchange in May 2014.

Adam Banai

Adam Banai has received his MSc degree in investment analysis and risk management from Corvinus University of Budapest. He joined the Financial Stability department of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB, the central bank of Hungary) in 2008. Since 2013, he is the head of the Applied Research and Stress Testing department at the Financial System Analysis Directorate (MNB). He is also a PhD student at the Corvinus University of Budapest since 2011. His main research fields are solvency stress-testing, funding liquidity risk, and systemic risk.

Gergely Daroczi

Gergely Daroczi is an enthusiast R package developer and founder/CTO of an R-based web application at Rapporter. He is also a PhD candidate in sociology and is currently working as the lead R developer at CARD.com in Los Angeles. Besides teaching statistics and doing data analysis projects for several years, he has around 10 years of experience with the R programming environment. Gergely is the coauthor of Introduction to R for Quantitative Finance, and is currently working on another Packt book, Mastering Data Analysis with R, apart from a number of journal articles on social science and reporting topics. He contributed to the book by reviewing and formatting the R source code.

A long ride!

First I should acknowledge that I'm just starting to get familiar with Quantitative Finance. I was always wondering what kind of topics I would need to learn if I wanted to go deeper. This book has answered that. Just look at the TOC.
All thirteen chapters are well organized and self-contained; you can pick up one and start working on it.
Each chapter gives you a clear introduction and explanation of the model and terminology that is required for further reading.
I appreciate that there is no waste of space and time trying to teach you R. It is assumed that you have previous exposure to R.
I still have not completed the book though, I’m half way thru, but I’m enjoying the exercises.
There is math (grad level) but it is not overwhelming or too dry like reading some financial math papers. Also each chapter gives you several references for further reading.

The R examples are enough to give you hands on experience in each topic.
For example the chapter on Big Data gives you really good practical examples on how to handle large amount of data in R.

In summary I would recommend this book if you want to dig deeper into Quantitative Finance and R. It will introduce you several R libraries with clear explanations and examples. Just don't expect to complete the whole book in a few weeks!

one of my favorite PACKT books

I found Mastering R for Quantitative Finance to be a very interesting and useful reference, touching on many topics in the field. I cannot remember the last time I came across a book that covered subjects in the financial realm as diverse as interest rate derivatives, optimal hedging, fundamental analysis, factor analysis and neural networks – all in one volume. The book is replete with the R code used in the examples which helps flesh-out the material.

Practical and concise advanced guide

A practical and concise guide for implementing analytics in R for key topics in quantitative finance, covering key topics like Volatility modelling, Arbitrage pricing theory, big data analytics, options pricing, and many others. This is generally an advanced level book, helpful for those already familiar with R and provides the platform through which to understand the concepts and topics at hand. A must in the library of any quants, actual or aspiring.
