About the Author
Lukas Chrostowski is Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He is the Program Director of the NSERC CREATE Silicon Electronic-Photonic Integrated Circuits (Si-EPIC) training program, has been teaching silicon photonics courses and workshops since 2008, and has been awarded the Killiam Teaching Prize (2014).

Michael Hochberg is Director of Architecture and Strategy for Coriant Advanced Technology Group, based in Manhattan, New York, where he holds a visiting appointment at Columbia University. He has held faculty positions at the University of Washington, University of Delaware and National University of Singapore, and was Director of the OpSIS foundry-access service. He has co-founded several startups, including Simulant and Luxtera and received a Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (2009).

Grade 5 Up-In this moving sequel to So Far from the Bamboo Grove (Lothrop, 1986), Yoko Watkins continues her family saga. In extreme poverty, the Kawashimas-13-year-old Yoko, her 17-year-old sister, and her 21-year-old brother-struggle to survive as refugees in post-World War II Japan. After a slow start, this autobiographical novel gains momentum as the young people lose their wretched temporary home and are accused of burning a warehouse and committing a double murder. With the aid of new friends and personal aplomb, they find clues that clear their names and lead to the discovery of the true culprits. Along the way are fascinating details of how they make do and manage to preserve their dignity; the cruelty and humiliation Yoko endures in school; the interesting friendship they share with a Burakumin (outcast) couple; and an emotional reunion with their POW father, during which they must tell him that their mother died six years ago. The style here is a great improvement over the previous book, though some stilted dialogue still intrudes. The author is at her best in narration, skillfully building suspense and getting readers sympathetically involved in Yoko's difficulties and triumphs.

In the fictionalized autobiography So Far from the Bamboo Grove (1986), Yoko and her Japanese family escape from the Communist takeover in North Korea at the end of World War II and finally reach Kyoto, Japan, only to find themselves unwelcome there. This sequel has the same quiet honesty about ordinary people caught up in terrible times. Yoko's first-person narrative tells of a once secure middle-class child now homeless, hungry, and in danger. Mother is dead; 13-year-old Yoko and her older brother and sister struggle together to survive in Kyoto, scavenging for scraps, working at anything they can find, even cleaning toilets. Father is a prisoner somewhere; the hope of his return is like a heartbeat in everything they do. Driven from their warehouse home by fire, they find themselves accused of arson and murder, and they help the police solve the murder mystery. However, the core of the story is not the big events, but the family drama and the home the young people make together, whether in a shack or a hospital room. Their loving bonds are strong, but they're also irritable and nervy. Yoko hates her sister's bossiness, especially the insistence that Yoko go to school. The school scenes are brutal: the rich students torment Yoko as an outsider; even when she graduates with top honors, they don't want her in the class photo. Yet Watkins doesn't indulge in self-pity. Except for some occasional overwriting ("I sighed sadly"), the violent suffering is treated with restraint, as in the unforgettable vignette of a scarred atom-bomb survivor who dies an outcast. The climax builds to Father's return, and his homecoming is described with the intense understatement that characterizes the best parts of this compelling story. Hazel Rochman

a book everyone should read

when I was in middle school Yoko Watkins came to my school to talk about her experience in WWII Japan. My class read her first book, So Far From the Bamboo Grove, prior to her lecture. That book so affected me that I immediatly read My Brother, My Sister, and I. This book is what turned me into a reader and made me interested in a world greater than my own. I laughed, I cried, I changed as a person. highly recomended

Fantastic Book, Greatly Enjoyable

Being assigned "My Brother, My Sister, and I" as summer reading, I didn't start this book with a positive mind. As I continued reading, I noticed the fast pace and events that would keep you on your toes. This book does a fabulous job illustrating Yoko's emotions, feelings and ideas throughout her stuggles and triumphs. Definitely a "5-Star" rating!

However I believe it needs to be updated.

Great selection of words, but Not searchable

I just downloaded this book. It has a terrific range of words, BUT is NOT searchable, nor does it have a detailed contents page at the beginning which would make it easier to use without a search function. The lack of either of these features, greatly effects the book's appeal as an ebook. When and if these features are added, it will be an excellent resource.

This word book is fun to read in my spare time. I don't consider myself an intellectual, but I do try to enhance my knowledge. At almost 70 years, I need to keep my mind active too.

It is a good book to find interesting words

Interesting book, but it mis-defines a lot of words. I would suggest not buying it. For example, the book defines "judicature" with a definition that would be suited to "jurisdiction" but not "judicature".
It is a good book to find interesting words, but I suggest not relying on it for anything.

I have written and delivered many technical courses. All of them were clear, concise, and useful. I’ve been a featured speaker at numerous conventions. I’m married to my college sweetheart and enjoying a semi-retired life in Vermont where, one day a week, it is my great pleasure to give the tour at Ben & Jerry’s with some of the finest people with whom I’ve ever worked. Great technical book with a healthy dose of "human" element

This book is great for any one in the field of Performance and Capacity. The book itself is a quick read (finished it on the plane ride from Chicago to Dallas), but the content is very rich and comprehensive. Bob's focused on practical application with elements of psychology and common sense, instead of just pure mathematical formulas and theories. I especially liked Bob's Performance Rules (summarized in the final section). Highly recommended!

A Darn Fine Book

This informative and practical book is the best one I've come across on the subject of Computer Performance. It is not dense on math, and it isn't a book that will become obsolete in six months. If I were starting in this field, or teaching an introductory course on Computer Performance, I'd find this book to be most useful.

If you deal with computer performance issues read this book

First, I know Bob, I bought the book because I know Bob. That said, I would recommend this book even if you don't know Bob. The book is hardware/OS/application neutral, is doesn't describe any specific meters. Instead it describes a philosophy, or at least a thought process. He distills performance tools into 4 broad categories, performance monitoring, capacity planning, load testing and modeling. He tells you how to think about and use these tools. He also talks about the politics of performance how to deal with people who have turf to protect, face to save or no money to spend. He talks about presenting your data, what to do, what not to do and warns you to prepare a 5 minute condensed version just in case your 1 hour with the CIO is rescheduled. He does all this in an almost casual manner with no big words and no higher math (if you can figure out the x in 5x + 7 = 27, your covered). You will still need to understand the meters that your hardware/OS/application provide but after reading this book you will have a much better idea of what to do with them.

About the Author
Cindy Correa has spent the majority of her time teaching in technical schools and colleges that offer medical career programs. Most recently, she was the Allied Health Educational Coordinator and senior instructor at City University of New York at Queens College. Cindy was responsible for the initial creation and curricula development of at least seven certificate programs of the Allied Health Program and extended her expertise to satellite courses in outlying adult education programs. Her experience and understanding of the dynamics and challenges of teaching in technical schools, including computer lab courses, has helped create a book that facilitates instructors and students. Her experience working in the private practice and administrative hospital environments includes oncology, cardiovascular surgery, pulmonology, and thoracic surgery.

Out dated literature

I purchased this book for my computerized med office class at school. I found it very hard to follow and very hard to concentrate in the activities in the book. I felt chapter questions where vague and not applicable to the information covered in the chapter. I consider myself to be an education person; I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and finished the program early. This may have been a good book in its day, but technology has changed so much, it has basically rendered the book useless in my eyes.
